Desoldering mouse click mechanism?

Thread Starter
I decided to try and fix my old Razer Lachesis that has a broken scroll wheel and the left click mechanism spring inside is broken. I fixed the scroll wheel with some grazy glue, now just the left click is broken. I have a replacement clicker ready to solder on but i cant seem to figure out how to desolder the old one, i tried desoldering braid but it was taking forever, Any advice on how i can get the old mechanism removed?

Does it look like there's some stuff around the solder points (on both sides) that seem to be heat-sensitive (like maybe a really small chip or something... i can't really tell from here)? I doubt it but i've never really deconstructed a mouse before

If not and the braid still fails to work with your iron, you can try using one of those desoldering pumps from Radio Shack. I was able to remove IC chips from Commodore PETs safely with them even though they do get a bit hot so it should be fine for your mouse unless there some really sensitive stuff around the clicker lol. Seems like you can just put the "hole" of the sucker right on that pinnacle of solder. Just gotta be a little careful since it does get hot (place it, and if it doesn't melt immediately, lift then replace) http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062731

Or you can try the sucker without the heat: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062745

Those work but is harder to use IMO (i have both)

Thanks im so going to get one of those desoldering irons tomorrow. Theres a bit of square solder around the pins that the desoldering braid has a hard time catching, im going to try some more until i buy the dedicated desoldering pump.

Your best bet is either a desoldering iron, or good desoldering braid + flux. Cheap braid won't soak up the solder, and using extra flux really can help speed up the process. I would only buy a desoldering iron if you plan to use it more then once. You really don't need one unless you are doing a lot of desoldering.

Chances are that it is was soldered with lead free solder. That makes the melting point higher than traditional 60/40 solder so it would really help to have a high wattage soldering iron or variable solder station. That or as stated above, desoldering iron should work. desoldering pumps works good to get most of the solder out then use wick+flux to clean up the hole/pad. That usually works for me.
