The Phenom II x4 955 is the best choice. I think he is the price performance king. He had unlocked multiplier, overclocks extremely well also you can hit 4GHz with low voltages. But if i'm in your situation i'll go with 960T he is better than 955. He had better integrated memory controller with Thuban core, can unlock to X5/X6. Can overclock better than 955/965/970/975/980. Because of Thuban core. Requires less voltages to reach any level. Yes his stock is 3GHz but he can make 4.2/4.5GHz barrier.

The Phenom II x6 1090t is also a very nice choice especially if you are heavily multitasking, i just recently got one myself and it hit the 4GHz mark on all cores with no issues

It's just not worth bulldozer unfortunately

Ok man, seriously, stop saying a 955 will hit 4 Ghz with low voltages
Mine barely does 4.1 @ 1.49 with LLC @ 100% ...
I have to push a lot more to get to 4.2-4.3 which would take me above 1.55 V
For 4.0 you'll need a pretty good air cooler and airflow.
If you easily got 4.0 @ low voltages (that would be 1.425 -1.45 imho) then you must've had a pretty good chip.

Not all 960T unlock, there's a chance they will but it isn't 100%.

And can we all stop saying that AMD's overclock extremely well because they DON'T !!! Not my 3500+, not my X2 4400+ and not my X4 955... I cry and die a little inside when I see SB overclocks :'(

@ OP: Get the 960T if you're on a budget. Don't bother with Bulldozer

I got mine at 4GHz with stock voltage. I only gave it a bump to 1.45v to get it at 4.26ghz and I'm doing this on air. I guess I got a great chip

If you want SB go with it nobody says stay on AMD. But my comment was 100% the truth. Just check i5 2500k price and 955 price. There are DOUBLE TIME difference in price. SHOW ME WHERE IS THE DOUBLE TIME PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE!?

960T is the best option for am3, unless you want to go 1100T or 1090T the 6 core alternative.

If AM3+ im not so sure

I was gonna say get the one with this logo on it:

. lol. Good choice though a 1090T is pretty beastly when OC'd as well.

Enjoy your purchase!

I never said the 955 wasn't great value, I just said they don't always get to 4 Ghz easily, and that AMD really don't overclock that well...

And in electronics the price/performance drops the higher you go.

Might as well recommend everyone to buy a second hand Athlon 3200+ something for $5 ...
