SLI noob confused...460 sli setup

Thread Starter
So running my first SLI setup, and it's up and running, but I'm a bit confused.

I had a evga 460 gtx ftw (1377) card. Sadly these are discontinued so I bought a normal evga 460 gtx (1370). I was under the impression that the cards would automatically sync to run at the lower speeds of the normal (1370) card.

My plan was to just overclock the 1370 to the 1377 speeds.

So I hook everything up, update, download msi afterburner, nvidia control panel, and gpu-z. Looking at the 3 I'm a tad confused as each program seems to tell me something a little different.

THe 1377 is set in the top (slot 1) and the 1370 is set at the bottom (slot 2). However Nvidia control panel lists the 1370 as GPU #1. I fire up MSI Afterburner and it lists the 1377 as the master and i tell the 1370 to sync to it. However NCP and GPU-z stills list different settings for both cards.

GPU-z lists the 1377 as the first card but says the two cards are running different settings.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to setup up the differences in NCP as well?

Did u select for them to run in sli in the nvidia control panel?

Btw, they always sync to lowest clock speed unless u manually adjust speeds in afterburner/precision

Yes, SLI is enabled.

Even from the get go, before I ran MSI afterburner, NCP and GPU-Z showed no signs of either card running at synced clock speeds. Both cards showed different clocks.

Fixed, I think I found the problem. I think NCP and MSI Afterburner were fighting over which one would set the profile. A few tweaks and a reboot and GPU-Z is now showing both cards synced to the 1377 clocks.

The only difference between the FTW and the vanilla one is a BIOS that runs the former 50 Mhz something higher than stock (seriously). This post explains it well:

http://www.overclock.net/14176838-post152.html

It takes much manwork that it's just easier for them to clock up the BIOS then ship out. So the idea is, you didn't get anything different by buying a regular card. In fact, you saved money. If they "hand picked" the FTW, it'd have cost way more. Not $10-20 more.

As for your case, I assume the FTW is running at the same frequency as the other. They have to sync at the lowest denominator regardless of what software tells. Tried monitoring GPU-Z clock info? You're going to OC them anyway, so it shouldn't matter. I'd just clock em up and not think too much about what GPU-Z says. It can be wrong. Try to bench.

Glad you got it sorted, but a point of clarification about cards in SLI @ different clocks.

Unless you manually force them to the same clocks via something like Afterburner, they WILL run at whatever clocks they are set to in their bios.

To override this, use AB ... the 'sync similar cards' function is the easiest way ... in which case they generally will sync to whichever card it sees as 'Card 1', which physically can be either card, top or bottom, unfortunately ... kind of a crapshoot there ... it's arbitrary which card AB see as Card 1. But it's not actually important, you just kinda need to ascertain which one is Card 1, and act accordingly.

What will actually end up happening with cards clocked differently is that you'll get a lower GPU usage % on the card that's set to the higher clocks. Like, it'll never go above 95%, that sort of thing. IOW, it's 'synched' by the driver, behind the scenes, NOT via actually lowering the clocks on the faster card in a way you'd see in AB/GPU-z, etc.

You end up w/the same performance as you would w/two cards set to the lower of the two clocks.
