Do I need to upgrade?

Thread Starter
Hi all -
I have an Asus Rampage II Extreme 1366 x58 motherboard with an Core i7 940 2.93gz processor.

RAM: 6gb Corsair Dominator DD3 1600 triple channel

Video cards: Dual AIT Radeon 4870 x2's in crossfire mode

I am noticing that games like Battlefield 3 and (I imagine the upcoming COD MW3) lag a bit more for me.

What upgrades do you recommend? RAM? New video Cards?, replace everything?

I would upgrade from the 4870 CF, but what would you pay for a graphics card?
If you were to get an upgrade, it would be you graphics cards first.

Your cpu/mobo/ram are still very good.

What card(s) would you recommend for the longest term compatibility? One vid card or 2 vid cards. Is that necessary any more? I've had this system for about 3 years now, maybe its already getting outdated?

I'd say overclock your CPU. Disable HT and try to get 3.6-4ghz. If that doesn't change your FPS then you'll probably need a new GPU.

Honestly there's no reason you shouldn't be able to play either of those games fine with 4870x2s (esp since you're only running them in DX9); I'm thinking your quad-fire setup just isn't playing nice.

Why? Just because you have them and like them? Not only are 470's outdated and limited by the 1GB of VRAM, they consume a buttload of power.

I would recommend a GTX560 Ti at minimum. If you want to play at resolutions higher than 1080p, go with an unlocked HD6950 2GB. The Dirt 3 Edition seems to have a high unlock rate and only costs about $250 on Newegg. For the absolute best performance at high res, GTX580 3GB.

OC CPU, if you're going to get a card(s) from this generation, get a 560ti/6950
Or just wait till the end of the year, and get a upper mid single card from there.

CPU, RAM, and MOBO are all still very powerful.

The quadfire setup is not doing well. I suggest going for some 6950s or 6970s. You get 2gb of vRAM (BF3 eats up vRAM fast) and the crossfire scaling is done much more efficiently than nVidia's SLI. They are a much more futureproof card.
