Yup, with AA turn off he probably will but if we're talking maximum setting then he won't. I actually played the demo (both the alpha & then the beta just prior to its released days ago). I was surprised how graphic hungry the game is. The game engine in BF3 (Frostbite 2) is similar to Medal of Honor 2010 yet I lag at BF3 when using a single video card (non-quad CF). I can max out Medal of Honor 2010 with full AA (using a single video card non-quad CF) without any problems. Makes me think it's probably due to the game using a browser base set up full of bugs. Not sure really but the game is very graphic demanding if you want to max it out. Maybe DICE fixed the bugs after its released.

Yup, that's true. But very few games supports DX11 so not really a factor in upgrading. Gen3 probably but somehow I heard nothing about it yet.

Thread Starter
Hi all, wow thanks for the info, all a bit over my head right now as I built this box a few years ago and haven't been keeping up with the tech. Thanks for all the replies!

a) Yes I have 2 physical 4870 x2 cards (each card has 2 gpus), linked together with the crossfire cable. They are both overclocked via the auto-tuner that comes with the cataylyst control center

b) I have done no overclocking of the main CPU (i7 940). I do have the Asus CPU level up program which has pre-sets to 3.2gz and 3.6gz, but have not played with it. I'd love to just fine a program or "template" to do it for me.

c) I need to go back and re-read the suggestions but one thing I was wondering is if I could get one newer ATI card and still crossfire it with the older 4870?

I would recommend a GTX560 Ti at minimum. If you want to play at resolutions higher than 1080p, go with an unlocked HD6950 2GB. The Dirt 3 Edition seems to have a high unlock rate and only costs about $250 on Newegg. For the absolute best performance at high res, GTX580 3GB.
short answer: yes

OP wants an upgrade and wants to play bf3. SLI 470s are on the cheap and easily meet those expectations. power consumption, i'm pretty sure 1200 can cover it. why would i recommend something that i'm using...thought-provoking

somebody asks what cereal I'd recommend, I'll tell 'em Cap'n Crunch...because I eat it and it tastes good

Just because he has a 1200W PSU doesn't mean he should be trying to fill it up with unnecessarily power-hungry graphics cards. And buying used computer parts on Ebay is always a risky business. Why not just buy a 560Ti or 6950 new with warranty for a little more $?

It's kind of saying... well I can max out Crysis with dual GTX295's for cheap so I'll just get that.

I mean... opinions are opinions, but I just don't think 470's are the best choice here.
