Beginner looking for advice (simple tech station)

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build own simple tech station and I would like to start within the next week. I've got quite the number of decisions to make and am need of some help. I'm hoping some kind members here at OCN will help guide me through the process. I'll be sure to take a ton of pictures to post as I go.

I'd like to keep the cost as low as possible. I already own the necessary tools: dremel, power drill, circular saw, jigsaw, etc...

Since I want to keep this relatively simple I've decided to go with a two shelf design that a lot of test benches use.

Decisions
Acrylic or wood: because this is my first build I'm thinking it might be a better idea to go with wood since it's cheaper and more forgiving of errors
What type of wood: should I go with plywood, MDF, or something else?
What type of support: I'm debating on using one pole at each corner or actually closing off the front and sides and leaving the back open (I would cut out a panel on the front for my CD/DVD drive).
Cable management: If I go with the pole support then there wouldn't be much I could do in terms of cable management.

Other things I need to figure out
A simple HDD rack setup for my 3x HDD's and 1x SSD.
I'm not sure how to secure the standoffs in the wood.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll update this post with more info as I go. I'll be using this as for my every day case. I've been changing out parts quite a bit recently and I'd much rather use a tech station then my Tempest. I also like the lower temps I get with an open air setup (I've been using my Tempest without the side panel on for a few weeks now).

To back up your theories, I'd go with wood too. You can sand out a mess up in wood. That doesn't work so well with acrylic.

I really like how this turned out. He used birch but cedar wouldn't be a bad option either. I'm rather fond of the idea of using wood. It's possible that's just because I like the smell of it when freshly cut.
