Acer Aspire One 5552 random freezes with two sticks of ram

Thread Starter
This has probably been discussed before but I couldn't find a thread with this scenario, so here it goes. I have an Acer Aspire 5552, and since I first got it it has been locking up randomly, but the sound keeps going while all video, user input everything locks up, and it doesn't respond for about a minute. I tried using it with one stick of ram in the bottom slot, and it worked, no random freezes, so I put it in the top slot, no freezes. I tried reinstalling windows, didn't change anything, then I tried updating the bios, which didn't help. I'm all out of ideas, so any help is greatly appreciated.

It might be that it's a BIOS issue, although updating it didn't solve the problem. If both RAM sticks work each in every slot, but only by themselves and not together usually means there are some memory timings set too aggressively in the BIOS. You haven't mentioned if you tested each stick in each slot, if you didn't, just try it. If nothing works you may have to change the RAM sticks for other brands or replace both of them with one of equivalent capacity.

I have this same exact Issue. The harddrive light goes solid and all programs freeze up. Mouse still works but everything else is locked up for about a minute.
Mine is a 5552-3691. It originally came with 4GB of ram, i upgraded it to 8 and it still does it. Seems to do it more often with more programs running. I was thinking about upgrading the processor to a phenom N930 or N970.
What are the specs on yours?
Anyone else have any ideas?

I also did post this question previously: http://www.overclock.net/t/1148838/random-freezing-issue-acer-aspire-5552-3691/0_30

We arent the only ones, but it doesn't look like there is a real fix for this problem (other than maybe replacing the HDD) :

I think I'm going to be contacting Acer to try and see if i can get a different model frown.gif

Currently testing the ram in mine with Memetest86, will report back if it finds anything.
Im currently running 8GB G.Skill DDR3 1333MHz Ram.
Kidna funny thing, ACER included 1333MHz ram in this laptop even though the IMC in its processor only supports 1066MHz
Ive also submitted an email to acer so well see what happens.
Originally i bought this laptop for using at school, but if this issue persists it will make it difficult to use effectively frown.gif

Memtest86 passed the ram through 5 passes before i shut it off, so there isn't anything wrong with the ram.
Acer replied back saying that replacement was not covered and told me to restore the operating system to factory spec with acer recovery. What a load of crap.
i changed some bios settings so ill try to see if its still doing it.

OK i think somehow ive fixed it. I've basically tried to kill the darn laptop (running like 10 programs at once with 12 tabs open in FF) to get it to repeat the issue and it hasn't come up at all.
I'm Fairly certain that this is because of some settings i changed in the BIOS. However the Bios on these laptops is UEFI, and I've got an unlocked bios installed on it (advanced menus) and I'm not sure how many of the settings that i changed are available on the default bios.
This could indicate a serious problem with how the bios is set up by default.

Things i changed:
Spread Spectrum: DISABLE While I am unsure about this, I believe that this is the only setting available to anyone with the normal bios.
All the other settings i changed were only available after unlocking the bios's advanced menus:
IGP Advanced settings
CPU Power/Thermal/THRMTRIP settings.

I will try to go back through and reset the bios then change these again until i find out which one fixed the issue.

Despite resetting the BIOS settings I was unable to make the laptop do this again. I do know of one other possibility however. The issue may be a problem with the harddrive and Vram/Pagefile. By default windows allocates an amount of space on your harddrive to use fro the Pagefile that is directly correlated to how much ram you have installed on the system. Since windows would automatically adjust the size of the pagefile when you removed a stick of ram, this may be the issue. i tried resetting the pagefile to automatically allocate space but so far i haven't encountered the issue.

I will post back if it comes back, and try to see what fixes it. If i am able to fix the issue i will upgrade the laptop with a phenom II X4 N970 and a blu-ray reader thumb.gif
