How do I configure Xonar ST for Gaming?

I just recently got this Xonar ST. The sound quality is superb. I enjoy it. I knew going into this that it wasn't going to be as good as the X-fi for gaming. However I can't seem to get this to be anything but terrible.

Terrible. Like, literally~ positioning is just, all wrong. My onboard Realtek has better positioning. That's... that's not right. Something is off here, and I'd like to know how I can best configure this to fix this.

This card came highly recommended. Knowing it was going to be worse than X-fi is fine. I can deal with that, but I can't deal with gunshots sounding like they're blowing up next to my ear at 30 feet away on Metro in Battlefield 3, or Dolby Headphones making everything sound like I'm in a fishbowl.

Thank you in advance.

Why do you have Dolby Headphones on. Have I not stressed it enough that CMSS-3D and Dolby Headphones distort sound are are horrible for gaming?

Turn Dolby Headphones off. Use "headphones" under number of speakers. Depending on your headphones, you may alter the EQ to get certain sounds to be more prevalent. Otherwise leave the EQ flat.

Beyond that, there's nothing you can do to improve surround sound/gaming. I don't think it's worse than on board in terms of positioning, but it's not a miracle work either for certain games.

I tried everything because I get mixed signals and reports from all over the net. Asus doesn't really help. Those guys actually want me to go 8 channel, like~ really? On Headphones? It's hard to find a reference source for configuring these things. Thanks tho, in the end those are the ones I ended up at anyway. Pretty much the same settings I use to listen to music.
