My 5+ yr. old laptop runs Win7 beautifully; sounds to me like an end-user optimization issue.

Honestly, Ubuntu is slower than Windows 7 for me. You could try Xubuntu, which I highly recommend over the new unity interface, but overall, Ubuntu is a great way to jump into linux. You might want to try Linux Mint as well, it's based off Ubuntu.

Ryu,

Don't have the time tonight, but I'll be more than glad to help soon.

A few things...

1. Download Ccleaner, and Auslogics disk defrag (Defraggler does a better job of perfectly aligning everything, but takes much longer to run with no performance benefit.
2. What kind of HDD do you have (model)?
3. Download BootRacer (http://www.greatis.com/bootracer/) and post up the results so we'll have an idea of where you're at now.

Just so you know where I'm coming from: This is my 5+ yr. old E1505 (T2250, 2GB RAM, 320GB Scorpio Black) running Win7:

You could just do the easy thing Put a ssd in it and re-install windows. It really depends on what your going to do with it and if the hardware is supported in the particular version/distro your looking into for linux.

The latest ubuntu release should work fine on most modern to older hardware but it can sometimes be a little frustrating if you load an os up and something doesn't work right the first time out of the box. Do a little research first and see if anyone else has had any problems with the same model laptop you have before you make a decision.

btw What cpu is in your laptop? If you don't know post your model number and we could probably figure it out.
