Fallout 3 and new vegas

Ok so I wasnt really sure where to put this thread at so if its wrong someone please move it. I am having a couple issues that span a couple areas and this seemed like the best place to put it. First off I know my pc sucks, my rig in sig, I am getting a new cpu for it either a E6600 or a Q6600 for it so please dont be a donkey and start talking crap.

Is it just me or does fallout 3 have some kind of fps issues going on? I mean out of no where I can be walking outside with nothing really going on and bam my fps drops like a brick in water.

Today I started it up to try and get some play time in and it was awful. I am running it at 1280x720, no AA, no AF, and medium default settings. I started in megaton at my last save and it loaded up. Starts at 25 fps outside craterside supply. So I go walking around get out of megaton and it drops to 12-15 fps outside. I mean a straight slide show it was awful. I tried to give it a second and see what was going on and it stayed that way.

I alt+tab out the game and check task manager, cpu usage was about half way up, ram usage was at 60%. I end the game, restart the game and the same thing. I got pissed and went for a walk with the kids.

A few hours later I am like ok lets go again. I start it up with the same settings. It loads in the same place I start and its running at 45fps, I said ok thats better more like normal get outside and its at 35 fps when I am looking at a vendor. I start walking around to do my quest and it stays between 35-60 fps. Very playable for me. I played for over a hour and I did not see once the FPS drop under 30. Which is very good once again. Why do you think I had the issue with the bad frame rate earlier?

I know my cpu is old and dated but to go from 15fps to 35 in the same spot at different times just seems a little weird to me

defrag your HD, fallout 3 and new vegas both load lots of data real time, that could help. Also make sure both games are fully up to date.

I have my hard drive set to de frag every week. I thought it was the cpu being a turd but then to have the frame rate more then double playing it at a later time in the same spot with the same settings just didnt seem right to me.

I havent pc gamed in a long time so I am a bit out of the loop when it comes to this kind of stuff

Shut off all background applications, services, and useless apps. Lower your graphic setting. OC your CPU and GPU. Interior cells have high FPS because they dont have as many objects as an exterior cell. After playing a while, if you notice that the game lags mor open up the console using the tilde key and type in "PCB" without quotation marks, so it every hour or so. Also if you can have FO3 and FNV on a separate HDD, it help a bit with loading ti9mes ant things like that.

I'm gonna go with it's your setup. You only have 2gb of ram, a Pentium D and an 8800gt. Do a speed test on your HDD (write/read).
