2500K enough for CF 6970 Config?

Thread Starter
Currently i have my 2 6970's sitting in my ASUS M4A79XTD EVO with an OC'd 955 BE and i just feel like my CPU is holding them back with a potensial bottleneck. As dumb as it may sound some games just dont seem to be where they should with that kind of GPU Horsepower.

I run games on my 30 inch HD LCD TV at 1080 x 1920

Im looking at maybe just spending AUD$ 350 - 400 on a 2500K i5 and an appropriate PCIe x8 x8 Mobo.

Is my 955 BE holding me back?

If so would i see improvements with the 2500k i hear i can overclock this GPU quite easily over 4.0Ghz where as i can only attain a stable OC with my current CPU at 3.8Ghz and thats with a giant aftermarket heatsink.

what motherboard would i be looking at getting?

Yes, your 955 is holding you back. It's a bottleneck for your crossfireX setup.

The 2500k is more than enough for 6970 cfx at stock speeds, but you can easily overclock it 4.5ghz using a cheap heatsink like the 212+ just for fun.

Ur 955 is holding em back by a lot. My 1090t cant keep up with my 6850 cf, it's horrible. You can easily oc the 2500k to 4.5ghz at least. Even at stock the 2500k won't bottleneck a 6970 cf (from what I heard). If you have the money then go for it. You wont be disappointed.

These are very good Mobos:

You should know for a fact already if the CPU is a bottleneck. Check the usage during a game, check how many cores the game is using. In most 4 threaded games that CPU should be great. Only in poorly coded 2 thread games where the cores are loaded would I think to truly have any issue with it.

4Ghz on the i5 is usually a guaranteed. I came in figure 4.5 was the norm and its sadly all I got out of myne. 4.6 to 4.8 happen sometimes even 5 on air.

+1 for the i5 2500K, you could have a look at the asrock Z68 extreme (4/3) gen 3 boards, they are great value boards and I believe are ivy bridge ready (just a nice option for the future)

Yeah your cpu is holding you back, the 2500k wont be a problem at 4.5Ghz.

Also these are a bit over your budget but the mother board will help when SB-E comes out because this board supports PCIe 3.0 and the SB-E cpu.

That must suck... I'm only CPU bottlenecked on my 6950s in a couple of games.
