Asus P8Z68-V Pro Double boot problem

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with a problem I've been having with my board.
I know there are a number of similar topics on the issue and I've spent a lot of time reading through them. But none of the solutions have seemed to work.

My computer is stable, has never blue screened or crashed on me during any activities. In fact as with all the other cold boot threads I've read, this only happens when the PC has been switched on for the first time. If I restart I get no problems.

When the problem presents itself my boot process is very much along the following lines:
I press the power button to boot, everything turns on, the fans spin, hard drive is accessed etc...
However, no output goes to the monitor - after about 5-10 seconds - the tower turns off
After 3-5 second, it turns itself back on
Successfully POSTs and boots into Windows

I'm running the 0501 version of the BIOS on my motherboard, so I know this isn't the latest version, but I was always under the impression of updating the BIOS as a last resort.

I have overclocked the computer, if needed I can always post some screens of my settings.

Things I've tried to solve the issue:
  • I've disabled the Marvell and JMB connectors as I do not use them on the motherboard
  • I've set the BLCK to 100 instead of 103 or 101.3 which seemed to be the defaults
  • I've enabled the power on by PCI-E in the advanced options of the BIOS
  • Sleep if I'm not mistaken is disabled and I never use it
  • My ram is set to 1.5V @ 1600Mhz, although the sticker does indicate they seem rated for 1.65V @1600Mhz

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but if anyone feels that screens of my BIOS need to be posted I'll do so.

On a side note how much of a problem is this? I mean will this issue reduce the lifetime of my parts, is it dangerous to the components?
I just doesn't seem right that computer seems to double boot every so often...

Many thanks.

Update the UEFI, then let us know if it continues, I had that issue with mine and it went away after a flash to the newest.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the reply. Are you currently using the latest 0902 version?

Also just so I'm aware would I have to copy the settings of my current overclock on a piece of paper or will they be retained with the update?

I couldn't find any reference to this in my documents.

As sean said try udpating the UEFI, I think 902 is the latest. I would recommend before doing so, write your overclocking settings down as flashing will earse all profiles saved. Also make sure you load defaults before you flash and also it's recommended that you clear the cmos after you flash.

Try that and report back. Hope that helps thumb.gif

Yes, I am using 902 for my mobo, but yours is a slightly different version than mine. Make sure you download the right one. wink.gif

I take it nothing happens to the components and boards then because of this?
I mean on my end it doesn't even POST before shutting off, so I don't think anything is loaded before the initial reset.

@Sean and Munaim1: Thanks for the tips, I'll dig out my manual, write all my settings down, restore defaults and at some point this week flash the mobo and hopefully this will fix the issue.

I'll update when I have something else to add biggrin.gif

Having the same problem, except my PC hangs the second time when I reach the windows logo, I end up shutting down and rebooting, and it works fine...

How do I disable the Marvell and JMB connectors and still boot? Ive tried disabling them, but then I get a message that there is nothing to boot from.

@ffudge_umms if you are using the marvel and jmb connectors to connect devices to them, disabling them will lead to not being able to boot into your system.

In my case I'm only using SATA connections, so I could disbale the two other connections with no problem.

I did this from within the bios, although I can't remember the exact menus off the top of my head.
But since you've been able to disable both connectors you must know where to look smile.gif

Regarding the failure to boot into windows, are you still locked out or after double boot and the manual reset you successfully boot into the OS?

It will definitely be because it's not updated to the latest version.
