4890 issue.

Thread Starter
Upon waking up this morning, I took my computer out of sleep mode and my 4890 decides it wants to sound like a drilll. It's loud and extremely annoying. If I kick my computer (hah) it stops for a second but in a few seconds is right back to raping my ears. I have my card over clocked in no way and is on auto, fan speed at 26%

I have checked for other culprits, but if i gently touch the fan on the graphics card it goes away. As far as I can tell there is nothing obstructing anything.

What to do?

Sounds like a bad fan honestly. Time to RMA or replace if you ask me. And quit kicking your computer.

Edited the swearing out of your post as well, please refrain from swearing again in the future.

Check into possibly re-lubricating the fan. I can't think of anything else. :X

That, I'm honestly not sure of. However if you are unable to lubricate the stock fan, you CAN just replace the stock cooler with something like the Scythe Musashi (hard to find) or something similar.

Considering my specs, would it be more appropriate to just build a new computer, or replace the graphics card, and if that would be the better choice, whats a good choice for replacement? Ughh.. preferably cheap. I managed to build this pc on the cheap 2 years ago. Would like to keep the cheap tradition going.

If you're going to replace your GPU, an HD5830 is equivilant to your 4890 (or an HD6850). The GTX460 1GB / GTX560 (same thing) would be the Nvidia equivilant. Anything more than either of those cards would be an upgrade.

Your current machine will do fine honestly. If you've got the money to build a new one though, an i5 2500k, ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 z68, plus the new GPU would do very nicely. The rest of your system would work just fine with the new hardware (unless you've got an IDE drive somewhere, new boards only have SATA).

Your cooler would work on the 1155 setup, your PSU is MORE than enough, case is fine, OS is fine, monitor is meh but fine.........

It would really just be the CPU, board, and GPU that you'd really NEED to get a huge speed boost. The i5 2500k, ASRock Extreme3 Gen3, and a GTX460 1GB would be a great upgrade, and wouldn't cost you too terribly much (maybe $400 or so for the total upgrade).

funny that you mention those two cards..

seems they are both for sale here on the forums

http://www.overclock.net/video/11461...30-6850-a.html

which would be the better choice, do you think. As much as I would like to do an upgrade at this time, It might have to wait awhile outside of the GPU. Have places my money needs to be more than the my computer.
