580 or 6970 for BF3

Hey guys so which of these cards would you recommend?

Direct CU II 6970 2GB - $590NZ
Direct CU II 580 1.25GB - $790NZ

I'll be playing games like BF3 and MW3 and want this rig to last as long as possible along with a 2500k. I won't be going SLI/Crossfire.

Is the extra $200 worth it for the performance? Or no?

I read and saw benchmarks showing in BF3 the 580 and 6970 are equal, but some others show differently as above.

Those benchmarks do not have MSAA enabled. AMD cards take a pretty big hit in performance when the game is fully maxed out and MSAA is in use.

I do not think that the extra $200 is worth it for BF3. IMO the MSAA does almost nothing to improve the image quality, just incurs a huge performance hit for little visual benefit.

I actually just sold my OC'd GTX 580 and decided to use my unlocked 6950 that I have OC'd to 970/1370 that I picked up for half the price I sold my 580 for used. Performance wise in my testing they were essentially identical with all settings set to Ultra except MSAA, which was off, FXAA high, Blur set to on, 16xAF @ 2560x1600 (Actually my 6950 on average outperformed my OC'd 580 at this setting by a couple fps). MSAA made even the 580 pretty much unplayable even though it did perform better than my 6950 with it enabled, but I do not consider it a viable option at my resolution with either card.

For smoother performance in MP, which tends to be a bit more demanding, I have found that reducing settings to High and using SSAO instead of HBAO @ 1600p makes things a bit happier.

Now Modern Warfare 3, cannot comment on that, but I believe the previous installments ran a bit better on Nvidia hardware, but not sure if that will hold true with the all new version.

Definitely the 6970. Not worth $200.

Hmmmmmmm, those graphs are interesting... So I guess if I want AA it has to be the 580 really. I'm sure I could live without it though so the 6970 should be fine. Just gotta think about which is better for future proofing now..

Yes, agreed. FXAA has about the same benefit, if not more. However, the 580 should technically last you longer, I just thing that the price increase should be less significant. If it is solely for BF3 (which you said it was not), my vote would be for the 6970, as it does better with FXAA than a 580, or no AA. IMO, the MSAA hit for Nvidia cards isn't worth it either.

Some things I would take note of:
GTX 580 has better overclock potential.
GTX 580 uses more power.
GTX 580 should have 1.5GB, (which makes me think that is a typo) While the HD 6970 has 2GB which is actually important for BF3, especially depending on your resolution.

6970 & 580 perform the same in BF3 with FXAA.
