Monitoring CPU and GPU temps

I want to rig up my Lamptron FC5 V2 fan controller to monitor my CPU, GPU and internal case temperatures.

Where would be the best place to stick the temperature probes that came with the unit?

The cpu one needs to go between the heatsink and the cpu.

And the gpu one needs to be inside the gpu heatsink on the chip.

Don't put a sensor between a chip and a heatsink unless you want higher than normal temps. People that fit sensors to the CPU cut a small channel into the heatspreader on the chip and use better quality ones than you'll have got with the FC5.

There's really not a good place to put them to get accurate readings so you're better relying on temp monitoring software like Real Temp or Core Temp for the CPU and GPUZ for the GPU.

If I managed to get some good quality sensors would they work with my FC5?

On my current system I use AID64 Extreme with the LCD on my G15 keyboard providing the display of temperatures fan speeds etc, is this good enough then rather than monitoring directly from the CPU or GPU water-blocks?

I don't know. I only use cheap sensors myself and haven't researched the better ones. It takes a bit of skill to insert the sensors into an IHS and doing the minimum damage to it.

If you just want to monitor temps then that would be fine. If you need the sensors to control fan speeds then not really. I'm not really sure where would be the best place for the FC5 sensors that would allow them to react to temp changes as when you're watercooled most of the internal heat of the case is removed.

OK cool, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll stick with AID64 or some other monitoring software for CPU and GPU temps.

The only other thing I possibly need to think about is monitoring my water temperature and flow rate, is this really necessary?

I do feel pretty much the same way, I want to see what the system is doing in the way of flow and water temperature. I haven't decided yet how I'm going to monitor this though, this may be a later addition to my build.
