Will it bottleneck?

Thread Starter
First of all i want to say Hello!
I am new to this forum.

Now...A few weeks ago my old 2004 computer died. I saw the perfect opportunity to buy a new one but due to money problems I brought a not-so-good budget PC. It is an :

E3400 Dual Core 2.6 CPU,
4 GB Ram
a crappy integrated Intel GMA x4500.

Due to the fact that i play games (i'm not really pretentious so if it works at 30 fps and 1024x768 i'm fine) i want to upgrade my crappy Intel Gma to a Ati Radeon HD 6850...

Now my question is : Will my CPU bottleneck the GPU even if i will overclock it to 3.0 GHZ?

Thanks!

In many games, yes.

Should still be more than playable in most games, however.

Yes it will. It probably wont be the CPU that bottlenecks it so much as the motherboard chipset. Low speed, etc.

Well that's a bummer xD
I guess I need to get a new CPU and a new Mobo to benefit from the full performance of the card.

Oh and i don't really understand the concept of bottleneck that much...so if I play the games at a bigger resolution the bottlenecks are rare and if i play at a lower resolution the bottleneck will be really bad?

at lower resolution, your gpu will not be stressed too much so it will perform at its max, the only thing that will slow it down is if the cpu cannot keep up (the bottleneck) so you will be stuck at the max performance of your cpu.

edit; simply - the less powerful of your components will limit the performance of other components that rely or work in tandem with it

With that CPU, maybe you'd want to consider saving money and look more towards a GeForce GTS 450 or Radeon 5770 or something? It shouldn't bottleneck as bad, and you'll be able to save money for similar (?) performance.

Yea...i was thinking about that but what CPU is required (Intel) so a PC with ATI 6850 won't bottleneck?
I mean...i could get the 6850 and then get a good CPU but i want to know if I can play some of today's games at 30 fps and 6850 with my current CPU.

Oh and with my computer and a...GTS 450 let's say will be able to play newer games at a lower resolution and lower details?

And one last thing : Which one is better? The GTS 450 or the Radeon HD 5770?

I think the Radeon 5770 is closer to a GeForce GTX 260 or something, so it's a bit better. I just threw those out as rough examples; not to indicate that they are equivalent.

Bottlenecking is hard to measure, as it depends on the game and many other circumstances (for example, something like Crysis would get benefit from nearly anything you pair with that CPU), but in general, something more modern mid-high end like a Radeon 68x0 or GeForce GTX 560 or above will be a bit much for that CPU at those speeds. I'm not sure how bad it'd be (probably not that bad really). If 1024x768 and 30FPS is all you need anyway, you could save the money as you'd have some bottlenecking and they'd be far overkill anyway. Even what I suggested should net you well over that frame rate at that resolution.

I would, however, recommend going with the higher end cards if you plan on swapping out the platform soon-ish and don't want to have to change the GPU again then. If it'll be a fair while before you do that (say, you expect to use this GPU for this platform and just replace it too when you overhaul the rest), then yeah, I'd save the money and get something lesser.

Well...money is a real problem so i just want to make a budget pc that can run newer games decent so i think i'm gonna get a Radeon HD 6770 (almost as same as the 5770) or the ATI Radeon HD6790 to save some money and then get a better CPU.

I will do more research tough and if bottlenecking isn't a HUGE problem with the 6850 and my CPU i'm gonna get it and then get a good CPU because the 6850 is superior to the 6770

Will the bottlenecking be less noticeable on the 6790?

But then again...ALL i want is the games to be playable at a decent resolution so maybe i'm gonna get the 6850.

E3400 isn't exactly the best CPU, but not all games are CPU intensive. The lower the resolution you play at, the more the CPU matters...the higher the resolution, the more the GPU matters. The 6670 would be a good option for the system "As-is"), but if you're planning on replacing the CPU, I'd go with the 6850. You can pick up decent used Core2Duos for fairly cheap now days.
