Best tablet $400-$450 range? - Page 2

When i was in the market for looking at tablets, my needs were almost identical to yours.

I looked at the Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom, Asus Transformer, and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Out of the 4, it came down to the Galaxy Tab and the Transformer. I ended up going with the Transformer over the Galaxy Tab, as it had the hdmi ports, micro sd card port, and ability to get 2 full USB ports + 8hrs of battery life if I got the lapdock.

The thickness and weight between the Transformer and the Galaxy wasn't enough to outweight the extra ports you get with the Transformer and lower cost.

So I have decided to go forward with the Asus Transformer 32 GB.

Quick question, I see several different models, it looks like they represent the bundle that comes with the unit.

To clarify:

The TF101-B1 is the standalone unit (which is what I am looking at)

TF101-A2 looks like the standard unit but with the docking station

TF101-A2 CBIL is with docking station and bilingual

TF101-B2 CBIL is with docking station but I have no idea what differentiates it from the other bundles with docking stations.

Also a couple of questions:

I believe the Transformer has a Micro-SD slot. Can I run video stored on the Micro-SD card? Or does it have to be copied into the unit itself. This is one of the reasons I am looking at the Transformer, the ability to add additonal storage.

I ran into a challenge with my Kobo Vox in that I tried to download Android apps off the Android Marketplace. The site would not let me do so because I do not have any android phones associated with my account. How would I resolve this? I do not have any android based phones.

Robilar can I intrude on your thread ? I have a question pertaining to the Transformer's usb port. Do you or anyone else know if you can feed the Transformer thru an external drive ? If so Could it play MKV content from the external drive ?

Also,is the usb port on the tablet itself or on the docking station ? Thanks and I hope I am not stepping on your thread.

That's an excellent question!

I'd be interested in knowing that as well. My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that there is one USB port on the unit and 2 more on the docking station.

for the android platform you can view files off the sd card using a file viewer app(like es file manager) then play whatever media files you want using third party app or native media player.

android on tablets are similar to android on phones, its based on linux software i believe. my phone can play music, videos, photos, and other multimedia files off of the SD card, so tablets should also have no problems with this.
As for the USB external hard drive, it should work the same way as an SD card, using a file browsing app

I have the 16GB and it does not have a usb port. It has the dock connector (proprietary 40 or 50 pin), mini hdmi, headphone, and micro sd slot.

I'm not sure about the keyboard but I know it has at least 1 usb.

Thanks for that....but I'm an old guy (66 years old) and I do not own a cell phone so I do not know what a browsing app is. Could you explain that a bit more and possibly supply info/link on how to obtain the browsing app.

Think of it like Windows Explorer for your tablet or cell phone.

I get that, but is it something that I would have to add to the device or does it come with it ? If I need to add ...what would be the best app to select? I do not as yet have the Transformer or any tablet for that matter but plan on getting one for the wife...so I'm trying to understand what will be needed
