Phenom II X4 830 OR Core i3-2100? [price/performance]

Thread Starter
Hi all, I'm looking to build a budget pc for everyday tasks of internet browsing and general office work. Snappier the better. I'm fed up with my snail [see below].

I can get the Phenom II X4 830 for $50 or the i3-2100 for $100.

I'm itching for the i3 since it seems to be the best budget gaming CPU...but when I checked out some benchies, the Phenom II X4 830 wasn't lagging behind so far in everyday programs.

I mean, for twice the price, I don't get twice the performance.

The only thing holding me back is the ageing AM3 platform. Whereas Intel has pretty much confirmed a solid future with the 1155 platform with the future compatibility with Ivy Bridge. I intend to get a decent motherboard to OC the chip to at least 3.5GHz (from stock of 2.8GHz). . Does the future look bright for AM3/AM3+?

I can get the Phenom II X4 840 for $60, and it is clocked higher, but since it's just a re-branded Athlon with no L3 cache, it doesn't seem to be as good.

Please advise! I will rep helpful responses!

Considering performance, cost, and energy efficiency the i3-2100 is the most balanced dual core chip under $100.

You have keep listing those amd chips as x2's. They are quads. Also you can not OC that intel chip. Well you could move the bclck a tiny bit but that doesn't really count. All that said get the i3.

If you happen to be near a Microcenter, they have the Phenom II X4 830 for $50.

Did you mean Phenom II X4 830? It would be a heck of a deal for 50$, but do check if it comes with a cooler.
Odds are you're going to have a hard time future proofing at this price range. So don't look ahead too much.

edit: x4 830 is OEM. no hsf puts you at about the same price as the i3 if you don't have a spare lying around.

soo.. get the i3. you're looking at a ~$10 difference on performance not 40.

I say get the i3 with a cheap p67 board. Down the road grab a 2500k or even an ivy bridge cpu and you'll have a system that will last for quite a while.

What you should be looking @ is system cost, not just the processor cost. A phenom II x4 830 deneb for $50 is a ridiculous deal if you already have an am2+/am3 setup, and a cooler.

As far as motherboard + CPU cost your looking @ roughly these prices @ microcenter, for the cheapest decent motherboard

$165AMIR for i3 + H61

or

$110AMIR for phenom II x4 830 + 760G MOBO (CPU cooler is still needed here)

Factoring a decent cooler in may make it much closer. If we were talking a client build id go i3 and forego overclocking, but a high clocked quad would be beneficial for a lot of things. Tough choice really. If you do go the AMD route i would consider purchasing a phenom II x2 and free motherboard and selling the x2 chip to recoup some monies(this could make that motherboard free if its a confirmed unlocker). That would make this thing real cheap, though more out of pocket, and more work.
