Phenom II X4 830 OR Core i3-2100? [price/performance] - Page 2

Sorry for the horrendous mistake there guys!
As some of you picked up, I was indeed talking about the Phenom II X4 830 OEM.

I forgot to mention that I already have a pretty decent cooler.
That 830g beast of a cooler, the CoolerMaster Gemini (original ver.)

My wallet tells me go AMD, my brain tells me go Intel.
The thing is, I should be able to get a decent second hand motherboard to OC the AMD chip. And I don't intend to upgrade for another good 2-4 years.

I would be wary of any microcentre deals. They just hike up the original prices of the motherboards a bit, and then put them on "sale". To add to the insult, many of the boards in the bundles are on the cr*ppy side.

Its really the good cheap AMD motherboards that make the AMD chips such a deal. And i would imagine a lot of people are selling solid AM3+ boards right now since bulldozer has been a let down for many.

Considering you already have a nice CPU cooler i would say go the AMD route for significantly less money.

YAY!! Thanks for the reassurance!

Looks like I can still be friends with my wallet after my purchases.

Now to look for a suitable motherboard *facepalm*.
I guess I'll head over to the motherboard section.

Ok so if you don't want to upgrade then definitely get the Phenom. Can't think of a better and more future proof deal for that money. As for the motherboard, this one looks good to me.

If you're going to use multithreaded applications you'll be better with Phenom II x4 830. But if you are going to gaming i3 2100 is the best choice.

Um. What do you mean by "if I don't want to upgrade"?
I do want to upgrade. Check my sig rig and taste the blandness of 2005's processing power.

That motherboard looks nice. But the price is a bit steep tbh.
I'll check fleabay or the user forums for a second hand motherboard.

Thanks anyway

I think it's a no-brainer; the Phenom II x4 830 (925) costs less than half as much and provides similar performance at higher clocks. This will leave room for a better GPU, among other things. AM3+ socket will support several future AMD CPU generations, but I'm not sure if a cheap 760G board will.

Well you said you didn't intend to upgrade for another 2-4 years, that's what I was referring to. I know there are cheeper motherboards, but bare in mind that Phenom IIs need a lot of power when overclocked, so a 4 phase vrm with no heatsink would be a little risky. A top blower type cooler like Gemini does help a bit, but still I would be more comfortable with a proper 8 phase vrm.

This is a good inexpensive board that I have used a couple of times and I am happy with.

If I had to choose between the Phenom II X4 830 or the i3-2100, I'd choose the Phenom.

However, since you said you didn't plan to upgrade for a few years, I would really recommend that you get an i5-2500K and be done with it. The upfront cost will be $100-200 higher, but you do gain a lot of CPU performance.
