Need good closed back, over ear cans for less than £300

I am completely confused when it comes to headphones....

There are so many brands / different types, however I am sure that I want over ear, closed backs (due to comfort, and not wanting to annoy my wife when she is watching TV).

The use for these phones will be:

60% Gaming
30% Music
10% Movies

I have a maximum budget of £300 ($450), however I would like to stay well below that if possible. I dont mind paying allot of money if its worth it!

I like the look of the Bose Quietcomford 15's but not sure if I can get more for my money!

Advice?

Sennheiser HD 280 Pro ( http://www.sennheiserusa.com/profess...280-PRO_004974 ). Outstanding sound quality in all environments and types of audio. They have pretty good noise cancelling and people next to you can't hear almost anything. They're only $150 retail and usually on sale for $90 (USD). You can always upgrade to the higher lines of Sennheiser, but these are just phenomenal enough to just buy something else with the money, like a sound card. They aren't the most attractive headphones, but if you upgrade to the 380s those look quite nice. I've been using them for 6 years and they still work perfectly.

Also, if gaming is your main concern (for sound placement and not so much quality), SteelSeries makes some phenomenal headsets. I've used the 5H and the Siberia, both are excellent. They are definitely the cheapest choices, but headsets shouldn't be so expensive, lol. You can pick pretty much anything over the 5H and be satisfied. (http://steelseries.com/us/products/a...eelseries-5hv2) is the 5H and ( http://steelseries.com/us/products/audio/steelseries-7h) is the 7H upgrade.

Astro Gaming makes another excellent headset with surround sound ( http://www.astrogaming.com/audio-sys...astro-edition/ ). If you go to LANs and your friends get the mixer sold by them you can create a physical Ventrilo. That's just a random bonus feature, but the headsets themselves have been my favorite for gaming ever.

Overall, based on gaming being the major use, Astro (A40 is $250) is the best. Second place would be Sennheiser (280 is $150 retail, can be found for $90 usually. 380 is $300 retail, never looked for normal prices) because of overall sound quality and endurance I've experienced. Certainly not last would be SteelSeries (5H is $80. 7H is $120). No matter what you pick, they're all amazing.

Hope that helped!

P.S. If you buy Bose, I will kill you

EDIT: By the way, the Sennheiser are the most comfortable headphones I've ever experienced. Even after 6 years... The Astro's are probably the least comfortable out of this group, but they're not bad for 1-2 hour gaming sessions or movies. Longer than that, get SteelSeries or Sennheiser.

wow, thanks for the reply, have some rep for your time!

Ok, Bose is out then..... :-)

Will look into the Sennheiser 280 / 380's which look to be good options.

I really was hoping that I could get away from needing 2 different headsets (1 for gaming , 1 for music), however is that the best way to go? I currently have the Creative Fatility set for gaming, and the Sennheiser HD202 on ear ones for music. My wish was to replace them both with 1 good set.....

However as FPS type games are the only ones that I play, sense of direction is a must...

Glad I could help

If you're really concerned about gaming AND sound quality, go Astro. If you have a sound card that supports virtual surround sound, just grab Sennheisers and turn that feature on. My 280s with stock onboard sound let me know the direction pretty well without virtual surround. Like I said, if you get cheaper headsets with a nice sound card, you won't know the difference.
