Computer no longer powers on

Thread Starter
So last night I was playing some BF3, when the computer suddenly completely shut off. I tried hitting the power button, and nothing. So, I clicked the PSU to off and went to bed. This morning I clicked it back on and hit the power button, and the power light and mobo powered on for a split second, then went back off. I brought the computer to the living room to open it up, plugged it in and used the power button on the mobo and the same thing; came on for a split second and then went off again. And each attempt to turn it on afterwards does nothing.

What should I start with in trying to diagnose the problem? Nothing has changed recently other than this Hawk that I put in about a week ago. I don't have another PSU lying around to test out and see if that's the problem. And suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Clear CMOS and try to find a PSU if that doesn't work.

It sounds exactly like what happened to me when my PSU gave up. You can test it though, if you unplug the PSU from the computer and bridge the green and black wires on the 24 pin connector you should be able to test the rails

It probably is your PSU. Have you tried unplugging the psu and jumping the power switch? If you don't know how to do that just do a search.
This is not very definitive though. Your psu might turn on jumping the switch but that doesn't mean it is fine. If it doesn't power on at all then it definitely the psu. If it spins but wont run the pc then you mifht want to try a different psu.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I will look up that link for jumping the PSU as I have never done that.

Well, I just did what the guide says to do and when I jumped the two wires, the optical drive kicked on and ran till I removed the jumper... So what's next?

Ok update, and now it works. It just powered on and posted. I don't have a monitor hooked up to it ATM... Odd

Edit: Well, got it all hooked back up in the bedroom and it turned on and is running fine.

I would use it as normal and see if it happens again. Though if something is wrong with the psu and it takes another component with it goes again. I won't blame anyone but me.
