Going for H100, best fans to get?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, as above im getting a H100 to replace my H50, Im mounting it to the top of the Haf X which already has 2 x 200mm (I think?) fans.

What I want to do is also have 4 fans on my H100, what are the best fans to buy? Must be available in UK.

Thanks!

(Not really loud fans please!)

I replaced my stock fans with NF-P12 Noctua's.. Not sure how they compare to other brands.

Although I paid like 19$ each..

The consensus seems to be that one should leave the stock fans pushing and add two fans of your choice as pull and the consensus is you should choose Gentle Typhoon AP15's . Very few sites that I can see use the model number that contains the AP15 string. Most sites have them listed as 120mm Gentle Typhoons 1850rpm (The AP14's are the 1450rpm, AP13 = 1150rpm etc etc) Anyway, I got mine from Scan.co.uk

When the H100 came out everyone was swapping out the stock fans and putting 4 all new fans on them because of the noise. However this was jumping the gun somewhat without thinking things through. The stock fans are indeed loud....at full RPM (2500rpm) People were putting on the likes of the AP15 and putting the fan controller on high. Much quieter alright, but that was because the AP15's max out at 1850. Turns out with the fan controller on low or balanced mode the stock fans are only a few decibels louder than the AP15's but are much better suited to pushing in rads with their high static pressure.

If you didn't overclock and knew you'd be leaving the thing on low permanently then you weren't losing much cooling effieciency with the AP15's and it was indeed quieter with a nicer tone but you had lost any headroom. ie. with all AP15's it didn't matter if you turned the H100 controller on high, the AP15's didn't have much else to give. This headroom is important if you are overclocking however. If you are not overclocking then why would you bother with a H100 in the first place. The things only pull away from a good air cooler when you overclock.

So, a rake of people have switched back to the two stock fans for push and 2 AP15's for pull. The other false assumption from the early days of the H100 was the desirability of Push/Pull. This showed real benefits with the thicker 120mm rads of the H60/H80/Antec920. However with the thinner 240mm rad of the H100 the benefit of Push/Pull is only about 2ºc. So why are people still doing push/pull on a H100 then??

Noise and getting to keep your cake and eat it too. The 2 stock fans in push are connected to the H100 fan controller and the two Ap15's in pull are connected to your mobo fan headers or fancontroller. The H100 fan controller is set to balanced. The AP15's at a constant RPM run quiet and aid cooling. The H100 stock fans stay quiet until preset temperatures trigger the h100 controller to speed them up. The quiet AP15's help make sure it takes longer for the rad to heat up enough to trigger the stock fans kicking into a higher louder gear.

So what you end up with is a combi stock/ap15 push/pull setup that runs only marginally louder than an all AP15 setup most of the time but with the headroom to cool really heavy heat loads with the help of the stock fans should the need arise.

Simple answer..

AP-15's for silent but cool.

Delta's for freezing cold.

If I had a rad like the H-100 I'd ask my fan question in the Water Cooling forum.
