An OS designed ONLY for gaming.

Thread Starter
A thought occurred to me last night while I was trying to fall asleep. I was pondering how I could squeeze a little extra performance out of my PC for playing BF3. Then an idea popped into my head. An OS designed ONLY for gaming. Nothing else. Only the bare necessities to play a game.

I thought about this the whole day and tried to check if anyone had ever designed anything like that. I found nothing. I'm wondering why no one has ever designed an OS like this, since I imagine this would increase gaming performance by ALOT.

Any thoughts on my thoughts?

People do it all the time for benchmarks. You can try and find one of those and hope not too much has been stripped away to where the game won't run.

Minus a few tweaks to make performance better, there probably isn't that much more to be progress to be made..main things that would be nice to change is byebye directx(I was thinking make a OS designed for gaming..not quite a stripped down Windows 7 )

Might increase performance... but not by much. A semi decent PC will handle games such as BF3 with a full fat OS. Stripping it might net you a slightly better ping and maybe 1-2 fps here and there... but probably not enough to be worth the hassle.

Would this be an example of Xbox and Playstation OS? They seem to be more optimized for gaming, being able to churn out some pretty good performance on old hardware. Even if it is vsynced at 30fps and games are optimized for them.

Yes, consoles are a very good example of highly optimised hardware and software. You look at the old, old hardware it packs, yet the graphics that they produce are really quite impressive.

A stripped win7 is the only thing I can think of.

I wouldn't say that the consoles are incredibly optimized since my laptop that has a pixel fillrate of 4.4 GTexel/s which is about the same as both consoles and can run BF3 on low-med at 720p. And I think this looks just as good as the console versions.

I dunno, i remember hearing that the PS3 has hardware that equates to a 7800GTX back in the day. You look at some scenes in GT5 and they are hugely impressive. Only downside really is the lack of anti ailiasing.
