Fine Tuning

Thread Starter
Hi,

I need some advise on fine tuning my folding settings. I have just started up folding again on my home system after upgrades to video hardware and the water cooling loop.

I am currently folding on 4 gtx590 cores (gpu-systray-641) and one i7 990x cpu (fah6.34-smp). The Beta 7 client didn't seem to recognize my GPUs so am using the latest "systray" one for GPUs and console for CPU.

I first setup the 4 GPU cores and they all ran fine at 100%. I then setup the CPU and noticed that GPU usage on all cores dropped to between 55% and 95% and fluctuated. When on GPU core stops to process a completed work unit and fetch another the other 3 GPU cores will bump up to 100% and stay there until the fourth core starts processing again.

All this time the CPU has been running a FahCore_a3 work unit (6098) which seems to have taken 24 minutes to process 1%. To get that 1% I had paused all the GPU processes. It has now taken another 45 minutes and has still not reached 2%. I seem to remember that when I was folding on the CPU before the recent upgrades things were going much faster, more in the 1% every 5 minute range.

I hope all that makes sense

Can anyone tell me or point me to docs which explain what I can do to fine tune things so I can get everything working as efficiently as possible?

At this time nothing is overclocked. I will work on that after things are running as well as possible at stock.

Thanks!
Sauron

I remember having this problem...I think you need to set your CPU priority higher than GPU in the settings. Let me poke around some guides and see if I can come up with the exact answer you need.

EDIT: Yes, have a look HERE, specifically the last post. Set core priority to LOW vice IDLE for your CPU. Results?

Also, if you set your GPUs to use the -advmethods flag, you'll get newer bigger work units that take up significantly less time on your CPU (at the tradeoff of a little extra heat...) so your SMP score won't be affected as much

That's good information that's not covered in guides as far as I've seen. Thanks!

If you want to get the maximum points out of your system, I would recommend following this guide to set up your cpu for folding. Also running the -advmethods flag for all your gpus as mentioned above would greatly increase the points you would get from your cpu. With this set-up you could get around 90k ppd from the cpu (assuming that the cpu is overclocked) and about 15k ppd from each gpu. This would give you a very solid 150k ppd if all is set-up correctly.

Thanks everybody,

I set my CPU to "Low" and added "-advmethods" to my GPUs.

The GPUs are now staying at 95% usage more consistently and the work unit on the CPU is getting 1% every 15 minutes now. Much better than before the changes.

@ BOB850123: Thanks for the link. I will look that over as well.

Cheers

If you use the guide BOB gave you the link for, you naturally wouldn't need to do the corefix. And for a VM you VirtualBox would be needed, as the other popular choice VMWare Player doesn't support 12 cores(threads).

Thanks Arvidab,

Happen to know how that would work with Gentoo and Xen? Those are the Linux version and Visualization environment that I have the most experience with at this time.

As long as 64bit versions are used I think it would work, never tried any of them myself, but I'm fairly sure I've seen some use Gentoo to fold on and a quick search of Xen I see that it has support for 64bit, Linux and for more than 255 processors which would make that work too.

I can't however give any pointers as how you would set it up tho.
