How to Force 8x PCIe?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
I have a GTX 480 (reference A3 revision) that is suffering from the relatively common Fermi-driver-freezing problem (usually freezes at Windows 'Welcome' screen). I've heard of people getting their cards to run if it's in a 8x PCIe lane, so that's what I'm going to try next.

I see all kinds of threads about people complaining their cards are in 8x, but none about how to do it. I'm on a mATX system with no room to spare, and no cards to take up a shared lane, so how do I do it if I can't manually change it in my mobo bios?

Things I've done in attempt to fix this card:

-Flashed bios from my friends working 480 to my non-working one.
-Cleaned the mass of TIM that was preapplied on this thing.
-Tried different driver versions, including beta.
-Baked PCB in oven (385F for 12 min).

Just add tape to block the lanes;

You could force x8 mode by using electrical tape. There's a guide around here somewhere which will tell you how much of the lanes to cover.

EDIT: too late

My mobo automatically runs my card at 8x when it's in the secondary PCIe slot (regardless of it technically being capable of 16x solo). Yours might do the same.

EDIT: nm see you anly have 1 lane.
