A 5850 is better as-is but it doesn't scale as well as a 6850 and uses a little bit more electricity.

Comparison of single cards
Comparison of CF'd cards

With better drivers the 6850's probably close the gap and beat them out.

5850 has a better price-point however...

5850 = $125-$150 used on OCN marketplace
6850 = $150+ new

If you can get a warranty with that its a great deal. If not, its average.
If you're looking for a used 5850 go for xfx they have lifetime warranties.
I just happen to have one for sale, and the warranty transfers once between owners pm me if you're interested

5850 will give you higher FPS but the 6850 has better shaders.

5850 and 6950 1gig is a better choice for those saying to get 6850 crossfire and it would be cheaper even.

umm the 5850 is slightly faster but if you clock them they go further than a 6850. If your looking at a dual card solution then the 6850's scale much better than the 5850s. So inconclusion you single card = 5850, dual card in the future = 6850. Plain and simple.
