HDD is acting weird after SSD install

Thread Starter
I installed my ocz solid 3 about two months ago. It has been running perfectly and as a boot drive, my windows load time was probably cut 400%.

I still use my WD 1tb as a storage drive though, and sometimes when i load from it the system stalls for a second or two, and i hear a hiss coming from the computer. This is something i never heard my hdd do before the ssd install. Is it because my hdd is going into a sort of sleep mode while the ssd handles the windows load? If not what is it and how do i remedy it?

Thanks in advance!

I cant say for sure.
Might be you have some sort of HDD power saving or HDD hibernation enabled in your BIOS that now your SSD is doing most the work that yes you HDD is going to sleep. :S

Sounds like the HDD starts to wind up when accessed. Otherwise it's not spinning? I'm pretty sure mine does that. I have a bit of delay when accessing some files off the HDD.

yea, you probably have HDD hibernation on, I think it is default to be on. Coming from an ssd, even that 3-5 seconds can seem like forever. I would just turn it off.

Its pretty annoying! Whats the point of booting from a ssd if your hdd is gonna hold it back -_- im sure theres something that can be done.

Turn Off/Shrink the Hibernation File: Applies to SSD/HDD
  1. Open the Start Menu, in the search line, type CMD
  2. Right click CMD icon that comes up and choose "Run as administrator"
  3. Type powercfg -h off and press enter to delete it
Type powercfg –h –size 50 and press enter to shrink it
Note: If you don't use hibernation mode, disabling it will save you several GB of disk space. If you do use hibernation mode, you can still shrink the hibernation file size. You can even move it to a HDD, I will make a mini guide soon. I say to do it at this point if you want to b/c it prevents extra writes as well.

It is from my guide here:
