GT AP-15 + H100 = brutal siren sound?

Thread Starter
Hi,

So I bought 2 AP-15s to go with my H100 and... well... the performance they offer is great, however, they have this sort of high frequency siren sound (check out the 1min Youtube vid I uploaded to give you an idea, http://youtu.be/19cC_ncdwTA - especially around ~54sec)

I recently bought some cheap Arctic Cooling F12 for the case and tried mounting them on the H100 just for comparison. Holy cow what a relief to get rid of that siren sound! Now it's just the airflow turbulence which is audible, although at full RPMs also a low frequency motor noise of some sort.

I can live with that. The siren sound, no.

What I have noticed:
-I have had ONE AP-15 mounted on the H100 rad while holding it in my hand, and there's no siren sound. Just airflow
-When I mounted the other one next to it, it started making the sound.
-When I powered on BOTH fans they went berserk frown.gif
-The siren sound intensity varies depending on RPM, but it's always there to some degree.

What gives? And is there anything I can try to eliminate the siren sound? Recommendations on other great low noise rad fans are also appreciated.

And I know I could just turn the fans all the way down to ~700RPM and eliminate the sound completely but that's not really why I bought them.

Thanks!

On the intake side of the fan, if you put it up against a heatsink or a rad itll start whistling. Pretty common, just lower the fan speed. That's what I did on my AP-15 on my megahalem

Set the fans for exhaust if the intake side is causing that problem.

That's what the new AP-15s are like. The old ones were nowhere near as bad and the old AP-14s were extremely quiet. You can reduce the whine slightly by using them in pull rather than push and shrouds also help a bit but it won't go away. I've changed to Noiseblocker PL2s, they're louder and have slightly less cfm than even the AP-14s but it's a smooth air noise rather than the annoying whine.

You shouldn't be using them for push anyway. The new consensus is putting the stock fans back on as push and AP15's in pull.

I'm in the market for four fans for my H100... I definitely don't want this issue...and to top it off AP-15s are not easy to find nad are not cheap.

If this is a common issue, please let me know *sorry for thread jack*!

So this only happens when they are used an intake? Wierd

They're pushing through the rad from inside the case. And I'm not really interested in lowering the fans to that RPM range where they're bearable.

They're exhaust I'm afraid

I'll look into the NBs, thanks. Don't have room for shrouds frown.gif

Unfortunately I don't have room for P/P configuration frown.gif Also, the stock fans are horribly loud! Like jets at full speed.

Anyway, I get the feeling the fans just aren't that good even though tons of people recommend them because of the whining. And it sounds like I'm better off with a pair of new fans instead of trying to get them to shut up.

I must say that if you're hunting a quiet PC, these AP-15s will do you no good. At full speed though, the airflow noise will drown the whining to a large extent but your PC will not be quiet anymore.

I think it's a lot to do with your personal noise tolerance. A few people have told me that they don't notice the whine. However they've also told me that they think they're silent so they're probably some way to being deaf or live on a busy main road.

The thing that bugged me about the whine was that I could hear it from 20' away.
