So for me.. im sticking with rubber dome. What made you want to get a mech instead of your x4? ive heard nothing but good things about the x4.
Been using x4 for a year nothing wrong really. Just dont like the glossy finish, larger spacebar and extra buttons. I had razer tarantula before my x4 and received a defective one. Returned it and got another broke one so never again will I buy Razer products.

And why I want a mech instead of just buying another rubber dome is that I want to try something new.

i was going nuts over this question before too. my decision was between browns/blacks and the presence of media keys. I had it down to daskey brown or meka g1 (black), went for the g1, FREAKING LOVE IT. i too came from a sidewinder x4, and the typing is leaps and bounds better than the rubber dome x4. there's no gimmick to the blacks, solid construction that registers the keystroke w/ ridiculously minimal actuation (1-2mm for me). i'm a student too, and while i do most of my coursework on my macbook, i love typing papers on my g1. gaming-wise, i've never tried browns (only blacks and blues)...that being said, i can't imagine gaming on anything other than a black-switch now. screw the click/tactile feedback, i like the immediate recognition of my intent (gaming & typing).

hope this helps.

edit: originally i was going to wait for corsair's red m/k, i'm glad that i didn't. w/o ever using a red, i ignorantly believe that reds are the p*ssy-whipped version of blacks X p

edit2: i too apologize for there are too many too's in this post
