Odd 6970 Crossfire behavior; 2ndary card acting as lead card??

So, I have a Gigabyte Z6A-D3H-B3 as a mobo and two 6970's; it's working great but..

My 2nd card is the one that seems to be driving both monitors. I have two monitors, one VGA(via adaptor) and one HDMI, and those are plugged into the first card, but the 2nd card is what clocks up. The 2nd card is also the one that activates when I'm playing a non-crossfire game.

I'm not getting any performance hits, but I'm wondering what's causing this. I even went into the BIOS and ensured the top card would be accessed first. I kinda want the card with the lifetime warranty to be the one that's doing most of the work.

...The lead card is also a non-reference card, though, from XFX... The 2nd card is a Gigabyte reference card.

Are you getting this information from MSI Afterburner?... Because MSI Afterburner does get the card positions wrong, and can call number 1 number 2, and vice versa.

Really?? I didn't know that... Huh..Lemme run something and put my hand by the top card exhaust.

Edit: Yep, top card is hot. (50c@40% fan) I didn't think of that. Thanks!

Yeah, it reports my 6950s the wrong way round. I've no idea why it does it, because it used to report them correctly, but since I took them out to fit water blocks, Afterburner has reported their positions wrong.

It doesn't seem like a constant occurence though; Adding the 2nd card later didn't do anything, and even across OS reinstalls on an AMD platform, but the moment I went from the Phenom II platform to Sandy is when the mix-up happened.

I think it's a totally random occurrence... Did you test your cards... is it the top card that's getting hot?

Download and install latest MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 8 to show the GPU order correctly.

When there are 2 monitors plugged to the main card, the idle temperature is always higher due to the higher idle clock to maintain stability.

It has been that way since 58xx series. Nothing is wrong.
