CPU idle temp, this can't be right, or is it?

Thread Starter
I5 2500k with a cooler master hyper 212, on a gigabyte Z68 UD4-B3

System temp 29C, seems ok, but CPU idle temp 16C-18C?

I'm thinking either this cooler does a really good job, or the heat sensor isn't accurate here. I got a window open in my room, no heat and the temp is around 60-62 F.

If it is staying at that temperature after idling for 10 minutes or more, then the temp sensor is inaccurate, or the software you are using is reporting it incorrectly.

Yeah its staying around that temp according to Gigabyte's touch Bios.

Anything other programs that measure CPU temp?

What can you do if the temp sensor is not accurate?
What's it say when you use RealTemp 3.67 when in Windows?

I wouldn't follow what BIOS says for temps, even though some say it's more accurate than in-Windows programs.

Seems too low for an Intel but 16c-18c is about what your room temp is at you say. Makes sense. One day I opened my windows when it was freezing and got this xD

Realtemp says about 24-28C, varying frequently in that range on each core. Is that closer to accurate?

I need to figure out my accurate temps before I try overclocking. Is there another program I can also check with?

That is definitely closer to what you should be looking to if the ambient temperatures in your room are cold. With the weathers shifting in SoCal my idle temps are down to 19C.

Realtemp is about as accurate as you can get for Sandy Bridge.

And those temps are about right at stock. I see those temps at 4.8Ghz w/1.425v with an H100.

You can probably do 4.5GHz at least on that cooler. Just try to keep things under 80c when stress testing using programs such as Prime95 or Intel Burn Test (manually select the thread count and choose maximum memory).

CPU doesn't seem to get any hotter than 45C during heavy gaming. It balances out around 45C.
