Xbox 360 Elite freezes on startup splash.

Thread Starter
My cousin just gave me his old 360 Elite that won't work.

It freezes at the splash screen (sometimes makes it to the Dashboard, then freezes). When I turn it off and turn it on again, it gets the RRoD (three lights).

This keeps repeating, freeze then RRoD. I've read that the HDD is the culprit, but I've tried without it and it does the same thing.

Anything I should do before I tear it apart and try the X-clamp fix?

My mate told me this trick if my Elite ever kicks the bucket, but it's a Falcon and very well looked after, so I doubt it will. Anyway, it worked for him.

Slightly dampen a towel (wet it and then roughly twist as much water as you can out of it).

Then leave it outside in a dry place, a shed or garage would work fine too.

Obviously, just wrap it around the outside don't let any water seep into the ventilation.

And just leave it a couple days until it's completely dry, this isn't really a permenant fix, it's something you might have to do on a regular basis, but it works on the same pretense as the x-clamp, if the console is overheating it needs to be cooled thoroughly, this is just the poormans way.

With some of the older Xbox consoles though, they got so hot that it melted the soldering on the motherboard. I think they're still doing this offer, and if that's the case you should send it in to Microsoft and they can discount you on a new console or maybe even give you a brand new one, for free.

Hope that helps,
