Indexing and Page File Question

Thread Starter
Should I turn Indexing off on my Main Drive (SATA), Page file Drive (SATA) and even my External Drive that is USB 3.0

Also I made a 10GB partition of my main drive and dedicated 10GB towards virtual memory. I currently have 4096MB of physical ram.

  1. Should I turn Indexing off on my Main Drive (SATA) - no
  2. Page file Drive (SATA) - yes
  3. even my External Drive that is USB 3.0 - never did myself, up to you
post #3 of 8
Indexing speeds up the windows search, if you use that I'd leave it on. Is your pagefile partition the first on the drive? If it is you should leave it on and use it, if it isn't it really should be because that's where access times are lowest.

You may be able to run without one, to be sure I'd use something like PagefileMonitor and see how much your actually using, also setting the min and max to the same value stops fragmentation, although that's not going to matter if it's in its own partition.

Should I dedicate 10240MB towards VM or 6144MBs which is 1.5x

Also I never really use the search function on my hard drive so I don't really need it I don't think. I reformatted recently so the only things I am keeping on my main drive is:

Windows 7, Origin, Battlefield, Skype, Mumble, Vent, Firefox, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Super Anti Spyware, MSI Afterburner, Steelseries Xai Drivers, Steelseries 7H Drivers, ESET NOD 32, COMODO Firewall, VLC, Speedfan, Driver Cleaner Pro

All my picture, documents, music, Photoshop files, CAD files, Cinema 4D etc.. are on my external.

I always suggest running PagefileMonitor and set up the most load your likely to (most apps open and used at the same time) - see how much you actually use. I don't have CAD or Cinema 4D, ect. so I'd be guessing. Just find how much your using and add on a gig or two for a good buffer.

You normally want 2 times your physical RAM. 8GB is good, but 10GB is fine too if you don't mind giving up 2GB of disk space.

Can you imagine if all your apps got loaded into pagefile? They'd be crawling.

I usually set mine to about 2GB. Enough that if I run out of RAM, stuff doesn't crash immediately. I can notice the extreme slowdown and slow window redraws and "this app is not responding" messages, and shut a few things down.

1.5x RAM is old advice from the Windows 98 days. When you had 128MB RAM total and a game needed 150MB to run, you better be damn sure you've got at least 128-192MB of pagefile. If you didn't your game or OS would crash. But nowadays it probably isn't necessary to set it so high. Very few of us are on RAM anemic systems. (Although I do still see Vista systems with 1GB of RAM - whenever I come across them I bump up the pagefile to at least 1.5GB.)

Many people with 8-16GB of RAM actually turn pagefile off - unless they're running super memory hungry stuff. (Adobe CS5?)

I was thinking that to myself lol.

Also, I had page file off with 6gb RAM before and I use adobe premiere pro, Photoshop, after affects, and Sony Vegas and I never ran out of RAM.

I have mine either disabled or at 400mb...I really can't decide if to have it or not still even though I see no difference.
