Get yourself a modern day DX11 GPU mate, which would truly be appreciated by a modern CPU/Mobo/Ram.
^ pretty much this. No point in trying to run 6 year old tech. Yes they were badass for their time. Today, not so much. In order to do anything with 8800GTX's, you'd need 3 of them, even at $40 each, it's not really worth it when you can get one of todays cards that will match the power of all 3 for roughly the same price. Not to mention, the new cards downclock themselves to save power.
At any rate, your best bet, even if you buy used, is get a mobo/cpu combo that's no more than 2 years old. Perhaps a 790FX board, and a Phenom II. Then get a newer GPU like a 460 or 5850. Either one of those cards will pretty much lay the smack down on even 3 8800's, well maybe not 3 but whatever. Not to mention they're DX11 and use a helluva lot less power. Then either SLI the 460's or crossfire the 5850's and you're good to go for a while.
You should be able to spend ~$500 and be able to put together a very decent gaming rig.
