Nope. According to gigabyte tech support you are safe to 70-75c with out failure or issue's on UD3,5 and 7.

@AtomFix Thank you for your contribution.

would the both of you mind stating your ambient temps?

Even with my side door off, it won't go past 55C on load.

With the side door on, it can idle anywhere between 43-47C and load 52C

So is the final word on the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 northbridge heat sink a pass or a fail? I'm really keen to get to the bottom of this mystery, as this board seems perfect for me in every other way.

I would say its a pass. I really love my UD3, overclock's like a beast. I love my board to death and its a rev 1.0( no LLC). I would say its worth getting.

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 is a awesome board ! The North bridge heat sink is kick ass, got it to 2800 and kept below 60C

Also a great board to overclock smile.gif

The biggest flaw is the plastic pins, changing those and applying proper TIM can work wonders and it requires almost no money to do so.

+1. CPU NB reside's in the CPU, the northbridge we are questioning here is the Physical NB smile.gif
