Just Wondering...What's the Safest 24/7 Voltage for Unlocked 6950?

post #1 of 16

Currently, I have my unlocked 6950 OC'ed @ 1.18v. I know I can go further but what is the max voltage I can use on air-cooling 24/7?
post #2 of 16
that idk im running at 1.27 so far okay any voltage it safe but stay under 1.3v since that is more for watercooled with full waterblocks.

Well from what I've been able to gather from my readings, the Sapphire TOXIC HD-6950 and most if not all stock HD-6970's (maybe not the MSI Lightning ? don't know for sure) come FACTORY volted @ 1.175v stock, so this should for sure be 'SAFE' ... and most decent OC results are seemingly achieved around 1.25v ... but from what I've read at 1.3v the performance increase doesn't warrant the additional voltage and in some cases, hurts the overall performance of the card ... So I'd guess the SWEET SPOT for your HD-6950 would be about 1.25v give or take. I don't think I'd risk pushing it much past that, Water/Cooled or NOT.

stock voltages:
6950 = 1.06-1.1V (some cards run a little lower)
6970 = 1.175V

if you're at 6950 is overclocked to 6970 speeds and underneath the stock 6970 voltage, you should be fine. if i recall, anything under 1.3 is safe with adequate cooling, and the software won't allow you to increase voltage above 1.35.

i would say anything is safe if you have good cooling for it and try to maintain a 70c full load. you can put as many volts are you want to it as long as you keep it at 70c or lower. in order to run a unlocked 6950 it takes 1.2vto 1.25v just to run at 6970 stock clocks. so i would say a max of 1.3 should be fine to overclock with.

I don't agree. ;-)

My unlocked 6950's both run 950 Mhz with stock 6970 volts.

1.175

You don't always need more voltage....

I'd have to join in the "depends on the temps" bandwagon.

My 6950 is running @ 900MHz @ 1.175v folding 24/7.
It was running just fine unlocked @840 @ 1.10v. I just wanted that little extra bit, so "pushing" the voltage to 6970 stock isn't asking too much.

My vote is always as little voltage as you can use while stable (isn't that what everyone ties for?).

I see the both of you have increased GPU clock speed...what about your memory? Is your memory OC'ed beyond 1375MHz?
post #10 of 16
I find it interesting that in GPU circles, people more regularly take the line of pushing voltage as long as temps are ok. As if too much voltage cant hurt the card. Yet for CPU, people generally acknowledge a voltage that is too high can damage the chip. Contradictory? Dont know. But i wouldnt push voltage much past 1.2 on air personally. In fact for the most part i keep them at 1175mv or lower.
