Suggestions for new card/cards

First post so I’ll try to make it good. My brother recently built a new rig and has given me his old EVGA x58 which is x16/x8/x8 and his i7 920 which I hope to OC to at least 4ghz but now I need some godly video cards as my 5770 won’t cut it. I need a card or cards that won’t need upgraded for at least a few years and I’ve come up with these options:

6950 CF unlocked to 6970 (Sounds kind of dangerous)
6970 CF
6990
GTX 580 SLI
GTX 590 (If I can find one)

Which set up would have the best performance and which has the best performance/price?
I plan on playing games like BF3, Skyrim and Arma 3. I’m currently on a 1920x1080 monitor.

I would personally find the biggest card you can within your budget. Then, grab another if the funds are available. As far as drivers go, CF and SLI can bring about issues occasionally so IMO, grab the biggest card you can, THEN if you still want more performance, grab another

I unlocked my Twin Frozr III 6950 to 6970 shaders and overclocked from 850 to 950 core clock and 1300 to 1400 memory clock. Easy as pie. I have a video on it if you end up going that direction:

Out of the options you listed, I think the best choice for you would be dual 6970s.

Since you mentioned that you're currently using a single 1080p monitor and you play BF 3, take a look at these and these benchmark results for 6970s in Battlefield 3 at 1080p. As you can see, a single 6970 will already get you a little over 70 fps at high settings for smooth gameplay, and adding a second will get you up to almost 130 fps, which is obviously well more than enough for smooth and great looking gameplay. Plus, you can get them for as low as $320 after rebate (here).

Yes, you could also get 6950s and unlock them, but I have no experience or knowledge on that process, so I won't comment on that, but you'll want to look into that to make sure it's doable for whichever card you want. Looks like frizkie was able to do it with his Twin Frozr III 6950s, so obviously, that would be the better option in terms of price/performance.

Based on that review, I can't really suggest the nVidia cards, since the price/performance just isn't the same (at least for that game, it isn't). The 6990 is another option, but that would cost about $100 more than dual 6970s for a mere 10-12 fps increase in a game you're already maxing out with dual 6970s.

Also be wary and look around if you decide to go with the twin frozr 3 6950 - there is a chance that your card comes laser cut and you can't unlock. If you buy I would say don't count on it or make it a deciding factor to unlock it.

Answer in short. Best price per performance 6990 or 590. Best performance 580 SLI.

This or best price to performance might actually be two 6970s.

I really like the idea of saving money and getting two 6950s then flashing/unlocking them but I'm afraid of having problems with them down the road.
I'd suggest grabbing just one 580 for now, then you can grab another down the road for an SLI. A single 580 should be able to handle any game thrown at it at this moment.

590 is my vote. They say the cards are crap due the lack of overclocking... but they are proven to be around the same level as the 6990.
