As said before Historically AMD has had just about as many sockets as intel if you leave intels server variants out.
But once they Hit AM they really kept it solid for awhile. Mind you there still is always having to have the right chipset or in the better cases having the best one to support ALL your features not just the ones that get you booted.

I would hope so it would be a pretty horrible idea to try and bring Haswell onto anything close to chipset compatible with Ivy bridge with what they seem to be doing with it. Older chipsets would hold it back why keep the same socket since your moving foward entirely?
