GPU Capacitor whine. Should I send the card back?

Thread Starter
I bought a Sapphire 6970 a few days ago and I love it. However, the capacitor whine is driving me insane. Even when the card is not under load the GPU whines like crazy and the noise is very irritating. The noise can even be heard when I am gaming with my AD700's.

Should I send the card back? Do all 6970's have this issue or is it just mine?

I bought it from Amazon and I would need to wait until Thursday to ship it back since they are currently out of stock but are restocking on Thursday.

it's actual called a coil whine and no do not send it back mine does it underload and read that it does no harm nor does it decrease the life of it. you just have to live with it or find out if your model card has a full waterblock for it. the noise is with all the 6900 series cards so no need to panic

Lol... I'm not panicking. I am just asking if all Sapphire 6970's have this issue or if it is only mine. Hell, Amazon will ship me a new one for free, and then I can ship the old one back. I guess I could just swap it out and see if it works.

My 6950's make a little noise too, but when I'm in the middle of a game I don't even notice it. I'm not even sure if it's possible to get a 6970 that's silent under load.

I have also noticed the whine, but it is usually inaudible over the sound of the jet-engine fan. I am looking into aftermarket cooling for mine. It's normal for the card from my experience, and has no adverse effects.

I seriously doubt it'd whine while idling. If it does, then you should rma it.

Keep in mind, if you do decide to RMA it and they can't replicate the problem on their end, it's a waste (and depending on whom it's sent to, you might be liable for shipping charges). But cap squeal is--well, not necessarily normal--but not a sign of malfunction.

Had a gfx card do it before--not a big deal and never had a problem with the card.

It doesn't whine while idle, it is more noticeable when I run 3Dmark and some games other than that I don't really hear it.
