Internet random disconnets.

Thread Starter
Hi all,

My internet connection disconnects every 15-30 minutes or so for about 15 seconds. It is really making online gaming difficult.

I've checked the router, I am hard wired, but my son is wireless and does not drop. Thus the issue is my system. I flipped the cable to another port, same problem. Since the internet works fine some of the time, the cable is probably good. It is a total internet cut off, not just one game or site.

I have checked my security settings, network adapter/router drivers and avast settings. Everything is running fine. Did a virus scan, all fine. The system ran fine with most of these settings for months.

The router is set to always on, all the settings are fine, too.

One thing is in Avast, when there is a disconnect a small bar of activity shows up in network shield. Only as analyzed, not as blocked though.

Getting a bit pissed at this. I'm thinking something software is interfering since if it were hardware, wouldn't it not work at all?

Windows 7 64bit
Rampage II extreme
Siemens Gigaset se 551 router

update:
When the internet drops the computer is still talking to the router and the router is still connected to the internet. When logged on to the router when a drop happens, I still have full access to the router in real time and the router shows connection to the internet. No drops there, so it is my system alone.

Thanks!

Patrick

Disable all the real time scanners in Avast and see if that solves the problem. Also, does avast have a gaming mode option, if i remeber correctly it does. Don't forget that you may need to unblock origins/steam type apps as well, not just the game.

I haven't used Avast for a long time and can't remember all the options but it's is probably blocking a certain type of packet, or seeing the volume of packets when gaming as an issue.

If something is being blocked by the OS then it will be in the Windows Event logs, look there for any warnings/errors during your gaming sessions.

Thanks for the reply!

Gaming mode does not solve the issue. I'm just waiting to see if Avast (now off) has anything to do with it, however it never had problems before and I've used them for years. Can't remember if there was an update when the problem started.

I eliminated steam early. I'm now watching the event logs (forgot to look at them!) thanks.

Will update shortly. I also ditched Firefox for Chrome.

When the connection hangs have you tried running ping tests? Ping something like 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.1 then ping something by DNS like google.com. It would help to identify what may be the problem.

The internet connection still works. Pinging will make no difference, in the same instance, another device can still access the web.

The problem is on his computer alone so pinging an external public address will make no difference!

@OP - Is this a new game that is causing this error, or a previously working game that worked without errors?

I wasnt questioning his internet connection overall, just his connection to it. Being able to connect to his gateway means his NIC isnt going into some powersave mode, or that his network traffic isnt being blocked. It means that ARP is functioning and that the OS knows where to direct his traffic. Pinging stuff will tell me if his connection dies at the router, or if there's something else going on. I'm not blaming his router but we do need more information to properly troubleshoot the problem

Update: Matty, the game worked fine before. The window system log caught it, well done. Don't know how to fix yet, but on right track, here is the info:

Name resolution for the name adserver.adtechus.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Looks like adware that is hiding. Will start the hunt

Thanks again

Try using public DNS servers instead, 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 or google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

That will be it, although I don't understand why it isn't getting detected and booted out!

Try spybot, search and destroy, it's free and straight forward, even Windows Defender might be worth a go if you don't already have it enabled, do it and run a scan.

It doesn't matter which DNS server he uses, spyware is making dns requests that are timing out, this is what needs to be stopped/blocked.

Why use a public dns server, when he would normally use his local gateway (DSL Router)for DNS which is then processed by his ISP anyway?
