I see allot if these headphone amps about, which are supposed to improve sound when using headphones. Do the good sound cards have amps built in?

Was considering shelling out allot of money on headphones, am just wondering if I should also get a good soundcard....

Some of them do.

I know my Xonar STX does, and I believe the Creative X-Fi (I think that's the name?) does.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Do people just use the E9 with the build in sound? What are these things like for gaming?

I seen the Fiio E9, but was confused if you also needed to buy the E7 for it to work....

Once you make the connection you cannot gain quality back. So if going from an on-board to an amp, the amp will...amplify it... The quality will still suck.

Garbage in, garbage out. Don't amplify a poor, noisy signal.

All souncards have an amp..but the level to which these amplifiers work is what you should concern yourself with. Titanium HD can support 330 ohms. Stx can support 600.

But supporting a certain rating does not mean the amp is capable of making the headphones shine to their full potential. Just means you'll be able to hear it.

More expensive amp, better product, better amplification.

You'll still want a soundcard or external dac for quality though.
