RAID 0 problems

Hello everyone, I recently had a single hard drive fail in a two-hdd raid-1 (mirror) array. When the problem first occurred I didn't know what was causing it. I restarted the machine and it successfully booted from the good HDD but CentOS failed to rebuild the array because the second drive was bad. I shut it down and ordered a replacement HDD (the same model and capacity as the original) but when I put it in I can no longer boot to CentOS. Now all I get is a message saying there were no bootable disks. I tried using a live ubuntu disk to fix the problem but ubuntu said it couldn't find any partitions on the raid 1 array. Now the drives do use a version of Full Disk Encryption that comes standard with CentOS which is dm-crypt. The partitions are part of Logical Volumes as well once you decrypt everything. I think this is the reason why there are no partitions listed. I'm not sure how I should go about fixing this however. Maybe it just needs the bootloader reinstalled on it or something. I would just like to be able to recover my data on it as it contains some items that I cannot replace.

I'm hoping this isn't a terminal problem and that it can be fixed. I don't know the exact model of the motherboard off hand but I can find it out. The RAID setup was done entirely through the motherboar's BIOS. It is an Intel-brand motherboard for sure. When I boot up it does list both my hdd's as being members of my RAID array (although the name has changed from KPORG to KPORG-1, not sure if that matters) and they list the condition as "Rebuild". It also said at one point that the drives would be rebuild once inside the OS. I've tried booting with only the working HDD or booting with both the failed and the still-good HDD but both times boot failed.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I will probably post this in the CentOS forums and another linux-related forums as well to cover my bases.

interesting issue.
rebooting your machine probably caused the problems with RAID 1.
IMO, as i learn more but sticking to RAID 1 in this case, i reckon RAID 1 is most effective on hot-swappable devices running 24/7. then if you have a HDD fail you can swap the failed HDD out and replace it easaliy with a new one without any problems.

Well I seem to have come to the conclusion of this problem. After lots of endless searching and fiddling I was able to eventually fix the RAID array with dmraid on an ubuntu 10.10 live disk. I used dmraid -R and then told it to use my new disk to rebuild with and it worked. When I rebooted intel matrix storage controller raid console showed both drives as working and healthy. Unfortunately there are still no partitions found on my disks and since I don't have the exact specifications of the original partition layout it will be impossible for me to recreate it. I tried several times to decrypt the entire disk using cryptsetup luksOpen but it unfortunately failed to work no matter what I did. The data is pretty much gone at this point it seems. Its the last time I run both hardware raid and full-disk encryption. Lesson learned, keep backups on a separate system that won't be effected by a hardware failure on the main system.
