MSI 6870 Hawk Overclocking

Thread Starter
G'day guys!

I know there are quite a few threads on overclocking 6870's on here but i've just got a few questions and would like some feedback on what i've got running at the moment.

GPU: 6870 Hawk @ 990/1070 (1.3v) Here

Basically my goal is 1000/1200ish.
1000 core at 1.3v isn't enough to stop artifacts, should i push the voltage up further or just be happy with 990? (60mhz overclock)

As for the memory i'm testing this now, currently stable at 1070mhz (20mhz from stock).

- Supposedly this provides more of a boost in FPS then the core, i'm unsure on this myself. Is this true?
- Is 1200 a reachable goal? Or is it just too far out there?
- Also what's the safe max (suggested) Aux/Memory voltage in MSI Afterburner?

Also has anyone else got any suggestions to stress it, (more the VRAM i'm thinking). So far COD:WAW seems to be the best thing to stress it for me

Any help is muchly appreciated!

Instability could be related to temps created at 1ghz.. and not insufficient voltage.

* my 6950 needs about 1.31v to be 100% stable folding at 1020mhz core..but im on water loading at 41c ... turn those fans up on your cooler, and see if you can keep load temps below 65c.

-as for memory a 70-150mhz OC is usually 'do-able' regardless of the quality of the RAM on these cards. Some get lucky and get really good ram that can OC 200-300mhz... other, not so much.

* i would use something like Vantage.. and just run the test at high Q and res.. and run only GPU related tests.. not CPU. Should help you see gains in performance..and any losses that may occur from pushing into ranges, either the core or mem cant handle.

Yeah i know it's not just voltage, but voltage did fix the instability when i went from 950 to 960. It's showing the same symptoms as what it did then.

My temps sit on about 69-71c depending. That's on auto fan..
I might see what i can do with my case fans, to see if i can get it to run any cooler. :/

dont leave the GPU fans on auto... set a 'temp curve' using AfterBurner...

ie- you can define a minimum fan speed of say 30%.. and set your delta, so that once temps reach +55c the fans kick up to 85% or higher...

I was keeping a 6950 under 68c at 1050mhz using stock cooler ONLY.. those fans WILL do the job.. just turn them up manually using software.

It's horrible at 85%+..

I'll use the software once i've optimised my case temps, just going to set it back to stock for now. I'm getting a new processor in a few days so i'll just wait.

I've got exams real soon actually, i may just wait till after them to see how it goes.

Thanks for everything btw!
