Is there any point in having a physx card?

Thread Starter
Are there any games with physx that would actually cause a drop in frame rate on a gtx 580? I ask because the two cards are basically sitting right on top of each other, while the gtx 580 sucks in the hot air coming from the pcb, causing my temps to skyrocket (as high as 86c in bf3 with 1.125v @ 900/1800 and 65% fan speed). So should I keep the 260 in or remove it?

Well,

There has been a few tests done with and without a physx card, It all depends on the game tbh. I saw an increase of around 15FPS in mafia II and batman AA. But other games didn't benifit much from a dedicated card.

Also 86c is fine, if it were hitting 90 - 95 i'd be more concerned.

I'd remove the 260 and let the 580 breathe a bit more. You don't need the 260 for Physx, as I feel the GTX 580 is plenty for rendering and physx.

Yes it's plenty, but it would increase FPS. Not sure how much tbh, do a bench with and without and see how it fairs, if it's less than 10fps then get rid of it.

Myself would rather just have the 580 by itself, but yes the 260 can/could help.

The thing is, how many Physx games are there to warrant the extra power/heat of the GTX 260 installed?

Having had a GTX275 for physx, the extra power it uses is negligable and the heat is non-existant in my rig. But It was a 570 and not a 580.

Watch this:

Basically, you don't need the GTX260 for PhysX... a GTX580 is powerful enough to cover that part on it's own (i.e. if you are having issues with the GTX580 breathing).

Also, just batman, Mafia II and a few other games properly use physX. If those are the only games you play, then yeah, keep the card. Else, don't bother yourself.

Personally, I prefer cooler temps so...

Pretty much just idle heat coming for the GTX275 then? Well I'd still remove the 260 just so the 580 can have more airflow.

I have an Asus GTX 570 in another computer and it's more than enough for games like Batman( Physx title ) @ 1080p.

Nah the 580 should be more than capable.

Yeah,

Even when using the card it never went above 35c - 40c. So it was just idling.
