MSI Twin Frozr III 6950 OC Tips - Page 2

post #11 of 24
That temp is high with 100% fan speed. I would just set the Vcore at 1.175v and see what highest core/memory clocks with that voltage with max full load 70c.

Running Furmark for few minutes is fine with that temperature but not for 24/7.

do try 1.175...if it crashed increase bit by bit...try to lowered the temp below 85C in furmark, if you can't get the temp down, you card needs water or lower the clock... 6950 won't last very long with that kind of temp

I've tried 1.175 @ 900/1300 and it's looking static at 79/80°C
It wasn't artifacting, so I think that's a good sign thus far. +rep to both of you

Thanks heaps for your contributions thus far!

Cheers

nice, you got the basic of it, keep tweaking to find your max clock and acceptable vcore while the temp stays below 85C

For interest's sake, I ran the stock settings... 81% Fan speed @ 75-76°C.

Perhaps I should re-apply the thermal paste?

Definitely try a reseat.

Those temps are WAAAAY to high, for the overclock and stock results, especially with that fan level. At stock settings my card DOES NOT top 68oC with any fan-profile, which invariably keeps the fan below 60%.

I'm hitting 72oC *MAX* whilst gaming with the fan speed (custom Afterburner profile) @ 62% for 72o with 1.19v for 920core/1420mem (shaders are at stock).

Also, I never bothered unlocking the shaders - the performance increase is so minimal in real-world terms that it's barely even to record in benching, let alone possible to notice. The *REAL* speed increase for any 6950 comes invariably from core/memory overclocking, core more obviously (though most should hit 1400mem rather easily, which is a nice and worthwhile bump)

With TF3 Cooler and ambient this time of year, at 1.175v the full load temps should not break the mark of 70-75°C. Definitely repaste and check all thermal contact areas.

I don't have any VReg temps in my GPU-Z, I just have VDDC Offset (1.2V) and VDDC Current % OCP.

These are my idle temps and readings;

I live in Australia, where the ambient temperature is currently 24°C (probably a bit warmer in my room from the 3 24" screens and the currently running rather hot computer... another one of my fans has been cycling through high and low speed settings despite my CPU and GPU fans not registering any extra speed when the fan in question - I still haven't determined which fan it is - spins really loud.)
