Laptop Search Help - Sub 15", i3/i5, ~$500

Thread Starter
Like the title says, I'm looking for a sleek SFF laptop, somewhere between 13" and 15", Sandy Bridge CPU, discrete graphics is a plus but not necessary, good build quality, and around $500 if at all possible.

I'm having trouble finding anything under $600, and at that price point I'm tempted to go with the $699 TimelineX 3830TG-6424. I don't really need discrete graphics as I have a desktop for that, I just want a small and light web-surfing laptop. Being able to play basic games would be great too. The only concerns I have with the TimelineX is the doubts about Acer build quality, basically everything else is perfect; the full aluminum body is especially nice. The cheaper the better as always, of course.

From what I've heard the Acer Timeline series are pretty good. If you're not comfortable with Acer I would suggest the Asus U36SD, although I was unable to find the cheaper model on any of the major websites. http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Superi...36SD/#overview

The Asus also comes with a 2 year warranty.

Off topic: I lack the time now to do a proper search, but within you budget I've seen quite a few options with a SB-derivative called Pentium B940 (or thereabouts). This CPU is an i3 without HT, if I recall correctly it has the same amount of L3 cache so performance should be good. The IGP is downclocked version of HD2000. Most lappies I've seen were of course rubbish, but you only need one that is good. About ACER's build quality - some are decent; not great, but serviceable in day to day basis - I have an Acer and I'm pretty happy with it, albeit it's a former high-end bought SH. A friend on the other hand has a lower end ACER and it is nothing but trouble - poor cooling system, slow(est) HDD ever, hard access to upgrade the RAM, poor screen, poor speakers (but only 400$ new). Before buying look at reviews, play with one if possible, cheap laptops can be good, but most are really bad.
