[CBS] North Texas researchers create ultimate flu shot - Page 7

A vaccination is supposed to make you sick. That is the entire point. It is called preventative medicine, and on the whole preventive medicine is cheaper then "reactive" medicine.

On the military, yes we are used to test medicine, procedures, etc. I was among the first persons that the H1N1 vaccine was given to, about 4 months before it went "public". Why you ask, because in the Middle East it was a legitimate disease to have concern with. The amount of people processed through quarantine dropped dramatically about 2 weeks after the base was vaccinated.

I don't personally agree with using any population for test purposes. But, objectively the military is a near perfect test population. Lots of people in close proximity, stress, deployed to horrid living conditions in some places, possibly weakened immune system, rarely given consistent medical care. (motrin and hydrate. lol) nearly complete medical histories and constant supervision. Can't get too much better.

For those that don't believe in vaccines for various reasons.(autism, cancer, population control, corporate greed, the old fashioned way.) Enjoy the herd immunity provided by the rest of us that live in reality. <--to be read in a non-tagonistic manner.

Some people are genetically immune (read incompatible) to the common "flu" viruses. That doesn't mean some other bug can't get you.

Also, even mono can be lethal. Not directly, but indirectly.

People don't always react due to a deactivated virus, sometimes it's a latex, or poultry allergy.

Vaccines have the virus in them to begin with, which is why some people have very bad reactions because you're effectively infecting yourself to build anti-bodies. However they like to put other things in vaccines that are not beneficial in anyway.
I'm all for letting your immune system do it's thang; I like avoiding the doctor's office as much as possible, but only to a point. Medicine has its uses. I'd be dead long ago if it wasn't for modern medicine, so I'm all for new drugs, I'll just not be first in line to test them out unless it's my life or death.

Now if you know a guy with an fMRI, I'd love to hop in it and watch myself think. LMK.

A few of them actually took tamiflu to combat swine and claimed it made them much sicker.

I find it very difficult to trust healthcare "professionals", and it takes me a number of months/years to open up and even consider any form of medication, and then i must be desperate.

Do people realize that Flu shots lower your defenses so that your immune system can develop an immunity?

You're reluctant to trust professionals yet you'll probably live longer because of them.

It's your right to not get vaccinated if the disease/virus in question doesn't adversely effect someone else's health.

Science has been wrong before, but spreading vitriol which mass hysteria has ensued have been wrong far more often.

Don't get offended when people deny your personal accounts as being unreliable in face of hard science.

Have your reservations but have them quietly... Anecdotes aren't a replacement for antidotes.

Yeah, that's fine. But there's a difference between having reservations about the unknown and rejecting science for no reason.

Did I come across that way? I certainly wasn't trying to. I'm not into the conspiracy stuff personally. However, I'd rather just take my chances without it due the the blasted side effects. As stated in my previous comment, me and the vaccine never got along.

In any case, I just wanted to clarify my stance here.

I didn't say medicine is bad. However I don't think people should take all these crazy shots every year specially when they haven't been tested properly.

It's one thing for a proven time and time again medicine to be utilized when necessary, but this country is heavily medicated and it is just alarming to me.

If these shots are out on the market for ~5 years with no bad effects I'd definitely consider it. I skip the yearly flu shot these days because they consistently make me sick for weeks immediately after I get them. The flu is actually better than the shot for me.

~80-90% of the people living on my dorm floor got H1N1 when it was going around but I was fine and I didn't have the shot that year. Maybe it's all the vitamins I take?

Medicine is trial by error. When it comes to flu shots I refuse. As long as I stay active and healthy my immune system has no problem fighting it off. Now if I lived in a hut with sewage piling up around it, and no clean water, then I'd consider taking the shot.

I think under those conditions, I'd worry about the plague much more than the flu.
