990x overclock - noob need advise

Thread Starter
Greetings from Vienna,

i'm new to this Forum so first of all - Hello to everybody.

i purchased a new system few weeks ago and i'm pretty happy
with it.
Gigabyte Sniper with a 990x, 24GB Dominator Gt and 2x 580 GTX
all beautiful packed in a Level 10 GT with liquid cooling.

However i'm not so fix in overclocking so befor doing some
**** and mess up me new cpu i'd like to ask you some
questions and let you take a look on my settings so you
can give me some advise.

i searched the web the last days, copied some
bios settings and tried them myself.

i found out, that cpu-z is always showing me much less v-core volts
than i've set in my bios - so my first question is:
which one is right? Bios or CPU-Z ?

next: due to the fact that those rams should work
with 2000mhz i've tried to upper the bclk to 200 so i can
get the rams to the goal of 2000mhz.
however the system didn't boot at first so i changed the volts a bit here
and there and finaly got it running stable with a (i think) to high
v-core of 1.44volts in cpu-Z and 1.47 in bios.

at the moment i'm back at 180bclk with and acceptable 1.376.

here the complete volt settings list:
Load Line - Level 1 (whatever that means)
V-Core - 1.418 (CPU-Z shows 1.376)
QPI/Vtt - 1.375
Cpu PLL - 1.800
QPI PLL - 1.400
IOH Core - 1.300
ICH I/O - 1.580
ICH Core - 1.300
DRam - 1.660

180x26
QPI Clock Ratio - AUTO (6.48 Ghz)
Uncore Clock - AUTO (3600 Mhz)
System Memory Multiplier 10

i would like to know if it's ok for the cpu to run 200bclk
to get the 2000mhz out of the rams, or if it's safer/better
to run my 180bclk setting.
with the 200bclk i put the multiplier down to 23 with a resulting
4.6ghz - haven't tried to boot with 24 yet. wanted to ask you
pro's first.

here's a screenshot:
first row shows my "at the moment" setting
and the one's below the 200bclk try.

take a look and let me know what you think is the better
one and tell me if any settings are absolutely wrong.

Luke

There's really only two ways that an OC is unsafe - your computer is too hot, or you're using cheap components (PSU and MoBo).

So first off, what motherboard and powersupply are in that computer? If they're not putting out clean/even power then your OC can fry components in the long run a lot faster than they should die. What heat sink, case, etc. Fill in your system info in your sig with as much detail as you can.

Secondly, your temps are VERY uneven on the processor. Each core should be within a couple degrees of all the others. In your computer there is a 7-20 degree difference, which is WAY to much variation. Double check the heat sink is tightened down evenly and properly.

Third, you need to be stress testing this OC. You're idle temps are in the 40-50 range, but what do those temps go up to when you are running Prime95.

And the setting in the BIOS is what you're telling it to send, the voltage reported by CPU-z is what's actually getting there. I have to set my 2600k to 1.43 in the BIOS to get the 1.39V I need for a stable 4.8GHz OC. This is reasonably normal as the voltages will drop slightly under load depending on other BIOS settings (like load line calibration), and the quality of your PSU and MoBo.

Also, whenever discussing temperatures of things, mention the ambient temperature of the room it's in. Saying my computer runs at 10C isn't impressive when it's in a room chilled to -40C. We need to know the temp of the components and the temp of their surroundings so we know their "delta" temps (how much above ambient they are)

You should be able to get 2000mhz with a Blck of 166. Set the Ram divider to 12x.

What type of clock speed are you trying to get?? 4.6ghz should be a nice clock for a 990x.

Edit: CTRLurself, on those 6core cpus, you do see a big difference in the core temps. You can see the same gap on my 980x temps. Yes my block was on correctly. Even with chilled water down to the temps shown, 20c diff between cores. The temp diode isn't in the center of all the cores.

Set ram to 2000mhz
Qpi freq: Lowest possible above Slow mode
Uncore: 3000mhz

What CLOCK are you trying to achieve? 4ghz, 4.4ghz, 4.6ghz???????

He's got a 990x. His will stop around 5ghz with HT on if he can cool it. 990x is way better at overclocking than the 980x. I had mine up to 4.65ghz HT on and 4.8ghz HT off.

Try this for the start, i hope it helps

LLC Level 2, it is very good and no vdrops in load
you have to set your memory manually because your auto timings are bad
bclk 167
cpu x27
mem ratio x12
uncore x18
qpi x36

voltages are your chip dependable but here are mine

vcore 1.3625v llc level 2
qpi/vtt 1.29v
dram 1.68v (my sticks are all single binned so they need more voltage in triple channel to hit spec so i keep them 1956mhz 1.66v 24/7)
pll 1.80v
ioh 1.16v

all other "normal"

thx to all of you for your help.

i'd like to reach 4.6 ghz with memory running 2000mhz.

i took a look at the memory settings in bios but there
is so much to adjust - i have no idea what values i have
to enter there.

the first four points should be 9-9-9-24 i think.
but i dont know what those other points are and what to enter there...

tRRD
tWTR

tRTP
tFAW
