4GB DDR2 vs 8GB DDR2 (and would this RAM config work?)

Okay, so my first general query is if the jump from 4 to 8GB of RAM (DDR2) is really worth it. If performance gains in gaming are only marginal, I may just be best off waiting until my (sorta far away) DDR3 build.

Secondly, right now I have 2x2GB of CM2X2048-6400C4 Corsair memory, which are 800MHz and have 4-4-4-12 timing, but I run them at 5-5-5-15 to increase stability. Can I put in 2 more 2 GB sticks of Corsair 5-5-5-18 memory and just run them both at these slower timings, making in total 4x2GB for 8gb of memory? They don't really sell CM2X2048-6400C4's anymore, so these are CM2X2048-6400C5s. They don't have the same heatspreaders and are a slower timing, but as far as I can tell that is the only difference (newegg page link). As long as the both sets are in the same channel with their match, will this 4x2GB setup work out okay?

My full system specs are below. Once again, thanks to overclock.net users for providing input to all my questions

No, the system would run at the slowest timing, in this case 800Mhz. I have 4 gigs of 1066 XMS2 for sale though. I dont think you will see any difference in speed, but when i doubled my 4gigs last year i noticed a big overall system stability increase. Even though i was having about 800megs free mem doing what i always did, having that extra 4 gigs freed up 'something' and my system was faster, Firefox was more stable with 20+ tabs open etc.

Ah, well I assumed that they would run at the lowest timing/speed, but my current ram is 800Mhz anyways so the new ones would be the same. I am just wondering if having very similar but different models of ram running side by side (in different channels, ie 6400C4 in channel 0, 6400C5 in channel 1) would adversely affect anything.

Yeah, maybe it will help with system stutter though? On certain games, namely BF3, I occasionally get pretty bad video lag stutter. A lot of people get this though, so it may just be a consequence of it being so new.

I have the exact same memory as you, i didnt see that before. All 6400C4. Its not for sale, yet, but maybe we could trade + cash on your end?

Sure, I'll have to see what you are selling exactly and decide if I'm going to get excessive and go for 8 gigs of RAM I'll send you a PM so we don't clutter up this forum.

If anyone else would like to weigh in on any gains they have seen going from 4 gigs to 6 or 8 gigs of RAM, that would be interesting and helpful!

This is what i posted over a year ago when i doubled my ram

"I tell you what, people who say having 8 gigs of RAM does nothing for daily use is a complete idiot. Prior to popping in the extra 4G's Firefox would crash every so often with about 10 tabs open including: Netflix, Ebay, 2 or 3 forums, 4 or 5 Guitar Center tabs tracking used gear and god knows what other tabs. Thing is Silverlight and Flash dont always work together and plugincontainer32.exe would invariably crash from time to time. Even when it was working right, Netflix would drag watching Stargate SG 1 in HD.

Its worthy to note that with 4G's i was running about 400 MEGS free with FFX and Outlook open. Now i have those (12 FFX tabs) plus PS7, Windows Explorer and Excel and running 4.9G's free. Thing is, ever since yesterday, i havent had ONE hiccup, FFX hasnt crashed once, nor have i had any random freezes/crashes or anything else happen. I wouldnt say my machine is 'faster' per se, but its smoother and definitely running easier with the extra RAM. Im glad this deal came up, because with looking to double my RAM, but not wanting to pay the same price i did 2.5 years ago has been a big hamper to that goal. I got it almost half price too smile.gif"
