Multi-Core AMD processors useless?

Everyone here on OCN is talking of ways to cool their multicore processors for more speed. That's fine, but isn't that kind of like pushing poo poo uphill?

The new AMD 8-core Bulldozer chip has come under fire for not really being any faster than the 6-core 1090T Black Edition, which I have. So it kind of looks like more cores just makes the chip "cuter".

More positive are my questions:

1) Does the running of several programs simultaneously necessarily result in the parsing out to separate cores of each program.

2) Are there ways of forcing the multi-core processor to distribute or multi-thread components of a single program. I'm speaking here of both software and hardware solutions.

3) Posed in a more simplistic way, what is the best way to avail oneself of all of the cores of a multi-core processor. Or are they no more than gimmicks at this time?

I will try to answer these with my limited knowledge biggrin.gif

1. Yes, W7/cpu works to spread the load out among the cores.
2. Interesting question, If the program is coded so that it can utilize running multiple threads at once, then yes. But older programs will I guess only allow threading on one core.
3. Multiple core cpu's are very useful if you are running multiple applications at once, or have an application that is coded in such a way as it can be threaded with multiple cores at once.(why its amazing for video encoding and such)

I would also add that it depends on what you are doing. Many core processors a la i7 a huge assets if they are being used for serious number crunching i.e. F@H for example. BD needs a revision.

First of all if you actually read what happened the bulldozer was the first chip to be designed by computers not by a person or more correctly people. The computer is so far not nearly as efficient at making these chips as an actual person so the circuit was very verbose and convoluted. In every other case more cores yields more power.
as for your questions:
1) It depends on the OS in theory if you are running multiple programs that are each single threaded windows should set each to have a different affinity or core that they prefer to run on. nowadays most programs are multi threaded to some degree which then makes this much more complicated.

2) A processor alone can not force a program to be multi threaded the program must be written for multiple cores. the closest thing to what your talking about is AMD's direct compute which tries to off load some of the work to the GPU but even that requires some level of coding.

3) multi core/thread support is becoming more ubiquitous every day that being said there are very few things written to run natively on a hex core. most now though use a scalable approach but this is less efficient than a program natively written for a specific number of cores.
